Fort Oglethorpe council praises LFO football team

- By Adam Cook

Fort Oglethorpe City Council took time to recognize the Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe football program during its meeting on Oct. 9 by giving the group a key.

“They’re a special group and we need to let them know that this city and this community is behind them,” Mayor Earl Gray said. “I think what they’ve done so far this season is just unbelievable. You’re all to be commended for it, and Coach Bo Campbell is to be commended for it.”

Gray says he’s been in the stands on Friday nights and encourages the public to do the same.

“If you haven’t been out to support them so far this year, then I really encourage you to do so,” Gray said. “They have a beautiful new facility, new stands. We just can’t tell you how much we appreciate you and how proud we are.”

Councilman Craig Crawford also praised the team.

“On behalf of the city, we’d like to say ‘way to go on’ beating Ringgold for the first time in the last 13 years,” Crawford said.

In addition to their work on the field, Gray says members of the team are role models for younger athletes in the city’s recreation department.

“This makes an impact on the youth we have at our recreation program,” Gray said. “The kids that are eight years old and up, they look up to y’all. When y’all start producing like this, our numbers go up because kids want to be a Warrior. You kids have an impact even if you don’t realize it.”

As of Thursday last week (Oct. 19), the Warriors had a record of 4-3 this season (3-1 in regional play). (Note: They played Murray County Friday night, Oct. 20.)
