Glam slam: GLMS shines in winning NGAC cheer title
The Gordon Lee Middle School competition cheerleading squad took the mat on Saturday as the favorite to capture the North Georgia Athletic Conference championship
And the Navy-and-White saved their best for last.
An energetic, crisp and clean routine, full of difficult stunts, pyramids and tumbling runs, resulted in Gordon Lee recording their highest score of the season and taking home the NGAC first place trophy.
Gordon Lee was given a score of 102.16 by the judges with zero deductions.
“There’s no offseason in cheerleading,” head coach Joni Kythas explained. “These girls take tumbling classes and private lessons to keep their skill level up. Today we maxed out in tumbling, both running and standing, and we maxed out in stunts. We’ve never scored (high) that before. They just did great.”
Kythas said her team’s familiarity with each other, on and off the mat, helped result in Gordon Lee’s first NGAC title since 2011.
“They are so close and they just work so well together as a team,” she added. “Some of these girls have cheered together since first or second grade. They’re really just a great team and a dream to coach. We’re so proud of them.”
Heritage scored 84.5 points to place second overall, while Lakeview (69.5) won a close battle for third place between the other seven teams in attendance.
