Local cheer squads compete in regionals, sectionals

Competitio­n cheerleadi­ng squads from the Catoosa-Walker County area will head to Columbus next weekend to compete for state championsh­ips.

Defending Class A Public School state champion Gordon Lee earned the No. 1 seed following state sectionals at Ola High School on Saturday. They finished one spot ahead of Trion in the standings.

The rest of the top eight that will compete for the state championsh­ip on Friday include (in order) Hawkinsvil­le, Commerce, Schley County, Lincoln County, Dooly County and Baconton Charter.

LFO finished as the Region 6-AAA runnersup behind Adairsvill­e, while Murray County and Calhoun took third and fourth. Ringgold placed eighth.

And in Region 6-AAAA, Heritage made it back-to-back region titles with Gilmer, LaFayette, Northwest Whitfield and Ridgeland rounding out the top five.

For the first time, all teams in Georgia will compete in the state competitio­n in Columbus this upcoming weekend.

The 25th GHSA cheerleadi­ng championsh­ip will take place at the Columbus Civic Center (400 Fourth Street). Tickets are $12 per session and all sectionals and finals will be streamed live on the NFHS Network. One subscripti­on rate will provide online access to all sessions.

Classes AA, AAA and AAAA will be in Session 1, which starts at 9 a.m. on Friday. Classes AAAAA, AAAAAA and AAAAAAA will start at 2 p.m. while the finals for Class A (Public and Private) and the Co-Ed Division will begin at approximat­ely 7 p.m.

Saturday’s finals will begin at 9 a.m. for Classes AA, AAA and AAAA, while the finals for Classes AAAAA, AAAAAA and AAAAAAA will start at 2 p.m.

The Civic Center will be cleared between the first and second sessions each day. General Admission tickets are available at the box office or online through Ticketmast­er. Flash photograph­y will not be permitted in the arena with a camera or any mobile device. Violators are subject to ejection from the site.

Defending state champions include Lambert (Class AAAAAAA), Northgate (Class AAAAAA), McIntosh (Class AAAAA), Cedartown (Class AAAA), Pierce County (Class AAA)., Vidalia (Class AA), Mt. Paran Christian (Class A Private), Gordon Lee (Class A Public) and Woodland-Cartersvil­le (Co-Ed).
