Fort Oglethorpe seeking public’s feedback on proposed dog park through online survey

- By Adam Cook

The city of Fort Oglethorpe is asking for the public’s opinion on a proposed dog park with a survey on its website.

The idea of a dog park in Fort Oglethorpe has been discussed off and on for a couple of years. But the effort gained traction last month when officials discussed a possible location and funding.

Public Works and Recreation Director Jeff Long pitched a possible Van Cleve Street location during the Oct. 9 City Council meeting and estimated that the project could be completed for about $40,000.

“We’ve looked at three or four different places, and one location we found is city-unused property that is pretty much undevelopable for anything else,” Long said. “It’s at Van Cleve Street and Patterson Avenue. This park would be about 400 feet long and about 150 feet wide. It would also be divided into two areas for the smaller dogs and the larger dogs. To do everything that would need to be done the estimated amount would be $40,000.”

During the meeting, City Manager Jennifer Payne-Simpkins said there is already $15,000 allocated toward such a project.

The council ultimately opted to table the matter to brainstorm how to raise the extra $25,000 needed for the proposal and to also gauge community interest.

During the most recent City Council meeting on Nov. 13, Payne-Simpkins revealed that the city has set up the online survey on its website (www.fortogov.com) so residents can answer questions, comment with input, and volunteer to help with the project.

“We would like to encourage everyone to go to the city’s website and take a look at the survey,” Payne-Simpkins said. “It’s an opportunity to provide the community feedback that the mayor and city council have requested on a proposed dog park for the city of Fort Oglethorpe. The survey will give us critical information that we need to put together a committee to explore this further. We encourage everyone to go take a look and participate in that survey.”
