Wrestling: LaFayette sweeps LFO, Calhoun at home
The LFO Warriors won six of 10 headto-head matchups against the LaFayette Ramblers last Tuesday, but were forced to give up four forfeits and ended up dropping a 48-35 decision to the Ramblers in match in south Walker County.
Starting at 138 pounds, LFO would win the first three matches. Caleb Chopane recorded an 18-3 technical fall against J.J. Muder, Lathan Stephens (145) pinned Hunter Deal and Jacob Brown pinned Jake Price to stake LFO to a 17-0 lead.
But the Ramblers would answer with three consecutive pins to grab an 18-17 lead. Brady Beard (160) pinned Jacob Sanchez. Cameron Hollingsworth (170) stuck Julian Waters and Tyler Beard (182) pinned Johnathan Cutcher.
The Red-and-White would win two of the next three bouts in the heavier weights to go back in front, 2924. Nathan Williams (195) pinned Bryce Blackmon and Kameron Peters (285) pinned Matthew Wallin, while LaFayette’s Cody Deal (220) made quick work of Dylan Simpson with a pin.
However, LaFayette would get their last 24 points without breaking a sweat as Hector Velez (106), Steven Sanford (120), Karson Ledford (126) and Carson Lanier (132) all were awarded forfeits.
LFO’s final six points came at 113 as Jerry Jackson won by pin over Landon Plank.
LaFayette 55, Calhoun 21
The Ramblers made it 2-0 on the evening and 2-0 on the season as they handled the Jackets in their first match of the night.
Plank (106), Ledford (126), Jordan Profitt (132), Hollingsworth (160), Brady Beard (170), Tyler Beard (182), Blackmon (195) and Deal (220) all won by pin. Mason Alexander (138) and Price (152) both won by decision.
LFO 43, Calhoun 42
The Warriors improved to 4-3 on the season with a criteria victory after the score was tied at 42 after all 14 bouts were finished. LFO won the match despite the forfeits.
All of the Warriors’ points came on pins by Chopane (138), Stephens (145), Brown (152), Cutcher (182), Williams (195), Simpson (220) and Peters (285).
Gordon Lee splits tri-match
The Trojans defeated Adairsville, 39-33, on Tuesday, but couldn’t get past Ringgold as they lost to the Tigers, 42-30.
Hunter Burnette was 2-0, wrestling at both 106 and 113. Tomy Duke (113, 120), Nathaniel Hunley (120, 126) and Braden Jarvis (170) were all 2-0, while Logan Butler (152) went 1-0.
No further information on the trimatch was available as of press time.
Short-handed Generals lose in Jasper
Heritage, still missing two veterans with injuries, dropped both ends of a tri-match at Pickens on Thursday, losing to Adairsville (40-35) before a lost to an improved Dragons squad (55-21).
With Jeffery Curtis and Spencer Davies still sidelined, the Generals got two pins from Seth Ingle at 152 pounds. Ryan Craft (106) was 2-0 with one pin and Zaine Burton (220) also went 2-0.
Nathan Boatman (120), Ian Burgett (126), Garett Stephens (138) and Drake Parker (195) all went 1-1 with one pin.
Trojans go 3-2 in Carrollton
The Navy-and-White improved to 9-3 in dual meets this season after going 3-2 at the CentralCarroll Duals on Saturday in Carrollton.
Gordon Lee handled McIntosh (66-18), LaGrange (48-28) and the Newnan JV team (72-10), but fell to Central-Carroll (39-33) and Newnan (44-29) in a pair of close matches.
Avery Geer (138 pounds), Jarrett Lassetter (160) and Jarvis (170) each went 5-0 on the day. Burnette (106) and Caleb Vines (220/285) were both 3-0. Jasper Wilson (132) was 4-1, while Butler (145/152) and Hunter Hartman (145/152) each finished 3-2.
LaFayette second, Ringgold fifth at Tri-State Invitational
The Ramblers had one individual champion and collected enough points to earn the team runner-up trophy at the 2017 TriState Invitational on Saturday at Ringgold High School.
LaFayette’s 113 points put them trailing only Coahulla Creek (147) after the final
points had been tallied. Northwest Whitfield (107.5), Dalton (102) and Ringgold (99.5) rounded out the top five.
Velez, a freshman, was the lone champion for the Ramblers as he took first in the 106-pound class.
Ledford (126), Tyler Beard (182) and Deal (220) all finished second. Brady Beard (160) was third, while Hollingsworth (170) and Wallin (285) both were fourth.
As for the host Tigers, Braden Milling (113), Holden Moss (132), Trevor Milling (145) and Griffin Green (152) all were runnerup in their respective weight classes. Logan Skeen (120) and Ethan Rohrer (126) both took third, while Jarrett Fuqua (152) and Malachi Parker (182) were both fourth.
Ridgeland battles at Buford
The Panthers, missing several in their lineup due to injury and football, still managed 59.5 points with just six wrestlers and ended up in 13th place finish at the Buford Invitational on Saturday.
Chris Prescott (126) and Ryan McGill (195) both finished second in their weight classes, while Preston Perrault (113) and Dylan Swanson (160) were both eighth.
