Fort Oglethorpe purchases water meters, discusses sewer plans
The city of Fort Oglethorpe approved the purchase of new water meters on Feb. 12 and also discussed the engineering needs for the future of its sewer system.
During the meeting, Public Utilities Director Phil Parker requested the purchase of more than 1,300 water meters, as well as funding for engineering services on two mandated task orders for the city’s sewer system.
The council unanimously approved the requests, and also accepted the Mack Smith Business Center and Sunset Cove subdivision as part of the city’s sewer system moving forward.
Parker says the water meters are part of his department’s ongoing transition to an automatic meter system.
“We’re requesting approval to purchase enough water meters to finish out our system,” Parker said. “Right now were at about 55-percent for automatic water meters in our system. Hopefully if we go ahead and get the purchase made we can finish it by summer.”
Parker says the automatic meters will make evaluation more effective and efficient for his crew.
“Right now, it takes us a day and a half to read, and another day to do rechecks,” Parker explained. “If we can get our system built out, we should be able to read the meters within about a half a day; as long as it takes to drive through town. It’ll hopefully cut way down on our rechecks because it will be automatic.”
The purchase from Delta Municipal Supply Company includes 1,300 residential meters as well as several commercial meters in the amount of $270,945.
Engineering
The council’s approval of the engineering bids includes a tab of and review of the city’s fog ordinance.
“On task number two, it’s a capacity assurance program due to be in place by 2020,” Parker said. “Engineers basically evaluate our sanitary sewer collection system and evaluate all the pump stations to determine the actual capacity in our system so we can establish the capacity assurance program.”
