McSpadden’s buzzer-beater stuns Mountain View

- By Scott Herpst

Down by two points with two seconds left and the ball under their own basket wasn’t the best of scenarios for the Oakwood Christian Eagles last Tuesday night.

One final heave by senior John Jacob McSpadden would change all of that.

McSpadden launched a threequarter court shot on the perfect trajectory just before the buzzer and found nothing but net as the Eagles stunned host Mountain View Christian, 48-47.

OCA trailed the entire game until the final score went on the board. They were down six at the end of the first quarter and trailed 2818 at the break before going into the fourth quarter down 36-30.

Slowly, the Eagles would chip away at the lead in the final period, getting the lead down to one with 10 seconds to go.

Senior J.J. Lanham would come up with a steal at half-court and fired a pass to McSpadden, who was fouled on a layup attempt with four seconds left to play. However, McSpadden would miss both shots and the Eagles were quickly forced to foul with two seconds remaining.

Mountain View would make both free throws, but the second shot was waved off due to a lane violation, keeping the score at 47-45. Garrison Baggett would then inbound the ball to McSpadden, whose prayer from the opposite free throw line was answered.

Woody Hass had 11 points in the win, followed by Baggett with nine and Cory Taylor with seven. McSpadden, Lanham and Caleb Epperson had five points each. Phillip Davis finished with four, while Tyler Epperson added two in a balanced scoring night for the Eagles.

OCA finished 3-5 in the SCAA and will be the No. 7 seed for the conference tournament, which was scheduled to begin this past Monday.

On Thursday, the Eagles (6-16) rallied from a 50-38 deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but missed some open looks late, while the Patriots were able to hit their free throws at the end.

McSpadden, Tuesday’s hero, had 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Baggett added 12 points, followed by Davis with 10. Epperson finished with six points.

Hass, Trevor Hobbs and Andrew Phillips dropped in four points each, while Jacob Wellwood and D.J. Terry each scored two.
