Ringgold Middle School bringing “Aladdin Jr.” to the stage March 23-24

-

Hop on a magic carpet, and fly your way to Agrabah as the Ringgold Middle School chorus presents Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” in cooperation with Music Theatre International. Performances will be on Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24, at 7 p.m. at the Ringgold High School Robin C. Christian Performing Arts Center.

Daniel McKee, RMS choral director, said the cast consists of sixth, seventh and eighth graders and everyone is thrilled about the show.

“Aladdin is an exciting show that these kids have grown up watching. Seeing their zeal for bringing the small details to life on stage has been especially satisfying,” he said. “The students auditioned for roles right before Thanksgiving break. They have been excited for the entire process.” McKee also says there will be a flying carpet and some other special effects too good not to miss.

“The ‘Junior’ edition of Aladdin is a slightly condensed version of the original animated movie, with a couple original songs thrown in as well,” noted McKee. “However,” he said, “the old standards like Arabian Nights, Friend Like Me, and A Whole New World are still there in all their grandeur!”

McKee always tries to focus on the themes in the shows the school produces, and this time, the overarching themes have been the importance of being who you truly are with no pretenses; and that owning yourself brings about great personal freedom. “I think Aladdin represents so many of us. Adults

want larger bank accounts and greater responsibility to make them feel better than they are. Students want newer and better clothes, gadgets, and friends to achieve the same goal. Aladdin tries his best to be a false version of himself, but in the end, it’s his truest identity that wins the heart of the one he truly loves.”

AJ Vaughn, an eighth grader who plays Jafar, said that he hopes everyone enjoys the musical.

“I appreciate being

the bad guy,” he said, “and I’m so happy that everyone got the roles they got too!”

Iley Barnes is also an eighth grader who will play the leading female role of Jasmine.

“I finally got the lead role that I’ve wanted since the sixth grade,” she said. “I’m really proud of this show and I love it.” Barnes also said that she was so excited to get to perform for her friends and family.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students at the door.
