Middle School Baseball: Gordon Lee opens with shutout victory at LaFayette

The Gordon Lee Trojans opened the 2018 NGAC season with a 2-0 road win at LaFayette last Tuesday.

Hayden Brewer got the win on the hill for Gordon Lee (1-0) in relief of starter Brodie Genter. Genter pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Brewer also threw three scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Blake Rodgers fanned one in the seventh to get the save.

Both Gordon Lee runs came in the fifth inning. A LaFayette error allowed Zane Blaylock to reach first base and Blaylock would later score on a Kade Cowan single. Cowan would later score from second base on a two-base error.

Cowan ended the day 2-for-3, while Tanner Wilson and Garren Ramey each had a single.

Cade Fisher pitched well in the loss for LaFayette. He went 5.2 innings, surrenderi­ng just three hits and two walks. Only one of the runs allowed was earned and he finished with 10 strikeouts. Skylar Cepeda threw the final 1.1 innings, giving up a hot, a walk and fanning one.

Ethan Adams was 2-for-2, while Cepeda and Kendall Culbreth each had one hit.

The LaFayette Middle School Ramblers improved to 2-1 on the season with a five-inning victory over Saddle Ridge Friday night at LaFayette High school.

Cepeda went three innings on the hill and got the win. He gave up just one hit and one walk and fanned seven. Chase Landon allowed a hit and struck out one batter in two innings of work.

Cepeda and Landon helped themselves out with hits, while Austin Tucker also had multiple hits at the plate.

Robbie Bates had a bases loaded double and finished with four RBIs as the Tigers won their first conference game of the year in five innings at Seabolt Field.

Kyle White had a single, a double and a triple, while Brent Bowman and Mason Parker each had two hits and an RBI. Aaron Elswick doubled home a run, while Ross Norman and Malachi Hill each had a hit.

Parker gave up one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts in two innings of work. Hudson Chandler allowed one earned on three hits with three strikeouts in two innings on the mound. Bates pitched one inning, striking out two.

Zack Harrison had a hit, a stolen base and an RBI for Rossville. Chris Maddeaux tripled and stole a base, while Aidan McGill had an RBI-double.

Ringgold 11, Trion 3

The Ringgold Middle School Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in NGAC play after a road win on Thursday.

Parker had seven strikeouts and allowed just one earned run on three hits in his four innings on the mound. Bates gave up just one hit and did not allow an earned run in three innings. He finished with four strikeouts.

Offensivel­y, Parker had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in two runs. Bates helped himself with two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Bowman had two hits and drove in three. White and Hill each had two hits and an RBI, while Chandler, Norman Alex Otting and Aiden Long had one hit apiece.

Ringgold 6, New Hope 4

Seven strikeouts and six strong innings from Mason Burt helped the Ringgold Tigers (6-1 overall) claim a non-conference win over New Hope from Whitfield County on Friday.

Burt allowed just one earned run in the win, while Bates closed it out with two strikeouts to get the save.

Parker had two hits and drove in two runs, while Brody Gann had two hits and one RBI. Norman finished with two hits. Long, White, Otting and James Klementisz had one hit apiece, while Burt and Hill each recorded an RBI.

Lakeview 6, Heritage 1

The Warriors scored all six runs in the top of the second inning and made the hold up in a season opening conference victory at Catoosa County rival Heritage last Tuesday.

Lakeview got six strikeouts in three innings from starter Dylan Blankenshi­p. Will Carroll finished things up to record the save and added a triple at the plate. Alex Dayton had a two-run single to key the big inning and Tanner Mantooth also picked up an RBI.

Heritage outhit Lakeview, 4-3. Ryan Heet scored the lone run for the Generals (01), but also took the loss on the hill. Only one of the runs he allowed was earned.

Lakeview 23, Rossville 11

Three Rossville players drove in two runs apiece on Thursday, but it was still not enough for the Bulldogs, who lost a slugfest to visiting Lakeview at Rossville City Park.

Maddeaux and Dylan Curtis each had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (0-2). Hudson Couch had a hit and knocked in two runs, while Harrison and Jacob Ross each added a hit and an RBI. McGill, Gordon Casteel and Ethan Waters all had one hit each in the loss.

Individual details for Lakeview (2-0) had not been provided as of press time.
