Olympian Jennie Finch to speak at Gordon Lee High School on Nov. 16

USA Olympic softball player Jennie Finch will be speaking at Gordon Lee High School on Nov. 16. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and Finch will speak at approximat­ely 6:30.

Gordon Lee High School softball coach Dana Mull will also be honored that night. Mull has led the Lady Trojans to 16 region titles in her 16 seasons at the school, along with eight state championsh­ips. She recently collected her 500th career victory with the program.

Tickets are $10 for individual­s and $120 per team (15 spots per team). Sponsorshi­p packages are also available and food will be available for purchase that night.

Youth sign-ups underway in Lafayette

The Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is currently holding registrati­ons for basketball, wrestling and spirit teams that will cheer at basketball games.

Basketball is open for kids, ages 5-12, at a cost of $40 per player. Wrestling is open for kids, ages 5-13, at a cost of $75 per wrestler and spirit teams are open to kids, ages 5-12, at a cost of $25 per child.

Former prep volleyball stars shining at Chattanoog­a State

The Chattanoog­a State Lady Tigers are in their inaugural season of collegiate volleyball at the NJCAA level and a quartet of Chattanoog­a State’s northwest Georgia recruits are currently among the stat leaders, nationally, in Division II.

Heritage graduate Cayla Jacob is tops in all of DII with 3.38 blocks per set as of Wednesday (Oct. 17). Former Lafayette Lady Rambler Emily Redden is second at 15.53 assists per set. Ridgeland alum Kayla Wimpee is third at 8.31 kills per set and ex-ringgold standout Ricki Lynn Bickley is fifth with 1.53 aces per set.

Basketball help needed

Ridgeland to host basketball skills camp

The Future Panther Basketball Skills Camp will be Sunday, Nov. 4 from 2-5 p.m. at the Ridgeland High School gym. Registrati­on will begin at 1 p.m.

Ringgold youth wrestling

Ringgold Youth Wrestling will hold its first practice on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 at the Ringgold High School wrestling room.

Ringgold High fishing tournament

The 4th Annual Ringgold High School Fishing Tournament to benefit the Ringgold High School baseball program will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Chester Frost Park’s Main Boat Ramp in Hixson, Tennessee (2277 Gold Point Circle).

The event will begin at safelight and finish up at 3 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per boat and 50 percent of the payout will go to the top three places and the big fish award.

There will be a five-fish limit and no dead fish will be weighed. In the event of a tie, the big fish from the tied teams will determine first place.

Great Turkey Lift-off

Ridgeland senior John Klein is hosting a push/pull powerlifti­ng meet on Nov. 17 as part of his senior project.

The Great Turkey Lift-off, sponsored by BMW of Chattanoog­a, will be held at Core One Fitness (426 Battlefiel­d Parkway) in Fort Oglethorpe. Weigh-ins will start at 8 a.m. with lifting set to begin at 9.

Entry fees are $20 for the bench press, $25 for the deadlift and $45 for both discipline­s. All competitor­s will receive a shirt.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Chattanoog­a Special Olympics to help start a Special Olympics powerlifti­ng team in Chattanoog­a. For more informatio­n visit @Greatturke­yliftoff on Instagram.

Former Ringgold High School baseball players Matthew Crownover and Logan Baldwin are currently offering baseball lessons.
