OCA soccer Eagles pitch another shutout

Another balanced team effort sent the Oakwood Christian Academy Middle School soccer team a 7-0 shutout victory over Lookout Valley last Monday.

Tomo Gilchrist scored four times for the Eagles, while Mana Gilchrist, Corey Holder and Hunter Hickman each had one tally to round out the score. Hickman and John Mcdonough shared duties in goal as OCA made it four consecutiv­e shutout victories.

The shutout streak ended on Friday, but not the winning streak as the Eagles improved to 5-0 with a 5-1 win at Boyd-buchanan.

Tomo Gilchrist and Ryan Phillips had two goals each in the victory and Isaiah Staven added one goal.

OCA’S home match with Berean Academy on Thursday was rained out and has been reschedule­d for this Friday.

LHS rifle team wins again

The Lafayette AJROTC rifle team edged out Northside High School of Columbus, 1,452-1,434, to win its most recent National Air Rifle League match. It marked the second win in a row for Lafayette (3-2), who is now in 10th place overall and fourth place in the JROTC conference.

Lafayette was led by Alyssa Kiser who shot a 384, while Alaina Shults (367), Troy Mussared (353) and Christophe­r Franklin (348) rounded out the team score. Also shooting for Lafayette were Trystan Smith (323) and Hailee Swan (312).

The victory also snapped a two-match winning streak for Northside, who was led by a 364 from Brandon Nicolay.

Lafayette was off this past week.

Jennie Finch to speak at Gordon Lee High School

USA Olympic softball player Jennie Finch will be speaking at Gordon Lee High School on Nov. 16. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and Finch will speak at approximat­ely 6:30.

Gordon Lee High School softball coach Dana Mull will also be honored that night. Mull has led the Lady Trojans to 16 region titles in her 16 seasons at the school, along with nine state championsh­ips. She recently collected her 500th career victory with the program.

Tickets are $10 for individual­s and $120 per team (15 spots per team). Sponsorshi­p packages are also available and food will be available for purchase that night.

Youth sign-ups underway in Rock Spring

The Rock Spring Athletic Associatio­n is currently holding sign-ups for basketball and cheerleadi­ng, for ages, 3-12. The fee is $50 for basketball and $50 for new cheerleade­rs (which covers uniform and pom-poms). The fee is $25 for cheerleade­rs who are returning from the fall.

Ringgold youth wrestling

Ringgold High fishing tournament

The 4th Annual Ringgold High School Fishing Tournament to benefit the Ringgold High School baseball program will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Chester Frost Park’s Main Boat Ramp in Hixson, Tennessee (2277 Gold Point Circle).

The event will begin at safelight and finish up at 3 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per boat and 50 percent of the payout will go to the top three places and the big fish award.

There will be a five-fish limit and no dead fish will be weighed. In the event of a tie, the big fish from the tied teams will determine first place.

Great Turkey Lift-off

Ridgeland senior John Klein is hosting a push/pull powerlifti­ng meet on Nov. 17 as part of his senior project.

The Great Turkey Lift-off, sponsored by BMW of Chattanoog­a, will be held at Core One Fitness (426 Battlefiel­d Parkway) in Fort Oglethorpe. Weighins will start at 8 a.m. with lifting set to begin at 9.

Entry fees are $20 for the bench press, $25 for the deadlift and $45 for both discipline­s. All competitor­s will receive a shirt.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Chattanoog­a Special Olympics to help start a Special Olympics powerlifti­ng team in Chattanoog­a. For more informatio­n visit @Greatturke­yliftoff on Instagram.

Former Ringgold High School baseball players Matthew Crownover and Logan Baldwin are currently offering baseball lessons.
