Oakwood Christian girls collect two more victories

The Oakwood Christian girls picked up a win in a defensive battle against visiting Georgia Cumberland Academy last Monday, 29-24.

Mary Ownby had 10 points and five rebounds for the Lady Eagles. Lily Green had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Grayson Broadrick had four points and five rebounds, while Avery Green also scored four. Raleigh Suits had three steals and rounded out the scoring with two points. Lexie Asher did not score, but contribute­d with nine rebounds.

The Lady Eagles raced to another big win last Tuesday as they tamed the Lady Lions of Shenandoah Baptist in Chickamaug­a, 48-10, for their fifth win in a row.

Ownby led a balanced scoring effort with 10 more points. Asher had eight points and six rebounds, while Suits and Anslee Tucker also picked up eight points. Avery Green added six points, followed by Mckenley Baggett with four, Callie Ray with two and Lily Green with two. OCA is now 5-1 on the season. Oakwood’s boys fell behind GCA 47- 28 at halftime, but attempted to rally in the third quarter as they cut the lead to single digits. However, the visitors from Calhoun would outscore the home team 25-8 in the final period to claim an 81-53 victory.

Jacob Wellwood and Tyler Epperson led Oakwood with nine points each. Cory Taylor and Caleb Epperson both had seven points, while Andrew Phillips picked up five. Three points by Chase Lanham and two from Woody Hass rounded out the scoring for the Eagles.

Last Tuesday, the Eagles saw Shenandoah pull away with free throws at the end in a 55- 46 win. The game was tied at 12 after one quarter and Shenandoah would forge a 29-26 lead at halftime. The Lions’ lead would be a single basket, 38-36, going into the fourth.

Tyler Epperson had 12 points, followed by Garrison Baggett with nine and Caleb Epperson with eight. Phillips and Wellwood had five each. Hass added three and Lanham and Phillip Davis picked up two points apiece.

The Eagles closed out the week with a home game against Mountain View Christian on Thursday and the Navy- andGold (3-5, 2-2) would bolt out to a 25-11 lead after one quarter en route to a 64- 47 wireto- wire victory.

Baggett added 13 points, while Davis and Wellwood added 11 each. Caleb Epperson finished with nine points and Taylor had five. Hass, Lanham and Tyler Epperson each chipped in with three each. Phillips, Noah Permenter and Jacob Jones all scored two, while Thomas Buckels was mentioned as a defensive standout.
