61 Catoosa students win local technology competition

- By Tamara Wolk Correspondent

On Dec. 4, dozens of students from Catoosa County Schools gathered in Ringgold to show off their technology skills. The Catoosa County Technology Competition was a chance for students from grade 3 through 12 to strut their high-tech stuff.

Students could work on projects in 15 different categories: 3-D Modeling, Animation, Audio Production, Device Modification, Digital Game Design, Digital Photo Production, Graphic Design, Internet Applications, Mobile Apps, Multimedia Applications, Productivity Design, Programming Challenge, Project Programming, Robotics, and Video Production.

The Catoosa County event was supervised and judged by more than 30 local school personnel and three guest judges — John Jones of Jones Creation in Chattanooga, science consultant Cheryl Thommason of Ringgold, and Bucky Bush, the technology director for the Northwest Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency.

Sixty-one students, some working in teams, some solo, earned the opportunity to move on to the next level of competition — the Northwest Regional Tech Competition hosted at Georgia Highlands College in Rome on Jan. 26.

Winners from the regional competition will advance to the statelevel Georgia Student Technology Competition held on March 9 at Middle Georgia State University in Macon and sponsored by the Georgia Educational Technology Consortium, where over 750 projects are expected to vie for the top spots.

The district coordinator for the Catoosa competition was Dr. Ingrid Jones, Professional Learning Specialist with Catoosa schools, and assistant coordinators were Evonne Hackett and A’lisa Ratledge. Ingles provided snacks for the competition and Chick-fil-a provided lunch for the judges and coordinators.
