Bobcats drop two away from home

Last Monday night in Dayton, Tenn., the Georgia Northwestern Bobcats saw the homestanding Bryan College JV team use a 17-2 run to start the second half as they handed the Bobcats a 74-66 loss.

GNTC overcame an early five-point deficit to tie the score at 21 apiece with nine minutes left in the opening half. There were several lead changes for the remainder of the half before the visitors took a 38-36 lead into the locker room.

However, the Bobcats’ offense would go cold in the opening six minutes of the second half as the Lions went on the decisive run. With 10 minutes to go, though, GNTC began to take the ball to the basket and started to find success.

They would chip away at the lead, ultimately getting it down to seven (68-61) with three minutes to play, but the Bobcats would never get any closer.

Georgia Northwestern took a total of 32 shots from behind the arc on the night, managing to connect on just six of them.

J.T. Langford paced the Bobcats with 19 points, followed by Jeremy Wilson with 14 and Kannen Derryberry with nine. Mark Chester and Cole Mckeehan had eight points apiece. Jarret Gill dropped in six points and Jayce Harris added two.

Derryberry had a team-high eight rebounds, while Wilson, Chester, Gill and Harris all grabbed six.

Some nights, you just have to tip your cap to your opponent and that was the reality for the Bobcats this past Thursday night.

Playing in Madisonville, Tenn., the host Tigers ripped the nets for 23 total 3-pointers, 15 in the second half alone, as they pulled away in the final 20 minutes to score a big win.

Hiwassee, who had just eight players in uniform, saw seven of its players score in double figures in the shootout victory. Alex Patterson was the top gunner for the Tigers as he drained 11 threes on the night to finish with 35 points.

The Tigers got out to a 10-point first-half lead and their advantage would be 10 points, 48-38, at halftime, despite the Bobcats cutting it down to four points on a couple of occasions.

However, the long-range barrage would pick up even more in the second half. Patterson would hit six straight 3-pointers in one stretch as the Tigers increased its lead to 20 with nine minutes to go and Georgia Northwestern would never get closer.

The Bobcats (4-14) put four players in double figures. Harris had a team-high 19 points to go with a team-best six rebounds. Wilson had 18 points and four steals. Derryberry had three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, followed by Langford with 13 points.

The rest of the scoring was rounded out by eight from Mckeehan, six each from Murphy and Chester and two by Gill.

The Bobcats were slated to begin a three-game homestand this Tuesday (Feb. 5) with a 7 p.m. game against The Crown College. All GNTC home games are played at the Rossville Athletic Center.
