The Ringgold Lady Tigers went into the Region 6-AAA tournament knowing they had already qualified for the state tournament.

However, the Lady Tigers ran into two tough opponents this past weekend and now will have to navigate the playoffs as a road team.

Playing on their own home floor, the top-seeded Lady Tigers ran into a buzzsaw in fourth-seeded Sonoraville, who raced out to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter of Friday’s region semifinal contest and never let up in a 65-41 victory.

The Lady Phoenix got 23 points from Alexa Geary and they finished with seven three-pointers as a team.

Rachel Akers had 16 points to lead Ringgold. Maggie Reed added nine points and Riley Nayadley finished with six. Rachel Lopez ended her night with four points, while Shelby Cole, Addi Broome and Sydney Pittman had two points each.

Ringgold led 32-22 at halftime of Saturday’s third-place game and the home team and held a 39-33 lead going into the fourth-quarter. But Lady Mountaineer standout Sarah Plemons would lead the fourth quarter comeback as North Murray outscored Ringgold 26-9 over the final eight minutes.

Plemons had 30 points in the victory, 20 coming at the free throw line where she was 20-of-28 for the game.

Reed had 15 points for the Lady Tigers (18-9). Pittman finished with 10 points. Cole had nine and Lopez added eight. Three points each by Nayadley and Baileigh Pitts finished the scoring.

The Lady Tigers will have to travel to always-tough Greater Atlanta Christian to open the first round. The date and time for the game had not been announced as of press time.

Sonoraville went on to win the region title with a 53-49 victory over Coahulla Creek.

The Tigers saw a 10-point halftime lead whittled down one with two minutes to play in the game, but a big 3-point play by Logan Hullender, a lay-up by Jackson House and free throws by Hullender, Blake Goldsmith and Cade Nayadley in the final minute would seal the victory last Tuesday.

Chandler Johnson had 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Hullender finished with 14 points and Goldsmith added six. Four points each by Nayadley, House and Dalton Green rounded out the scoring for Ringgold.
