Lafayette Presbyteri­an Church (LPC) is pleased to offer a workshop for adults, “Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children.” The training will be led by a certified, experience­d trainer and will occur on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2-5 p.m. at Lafayette Presbyteri­an. by LPC. A certificat­e of completion is provided at the end of the workshop which may fulfill organizati­ons insurance requiremen­ts. Space is limited.

Monday, Aug. 19

Blood Assurance North Georgia’s advisory board asks for residents of Walker and Catoosa counties to support Blood Assurance by participat­ing in the “New Blood” blood drives in August. Donations can be made at the Fort Oglethorpe Center, 2720 Lafayette Road, or any of these community blood drives: GNTC Walker Campus, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Walmartlaf­ayette, Aug. 30, from 3-7 p.m.; Walmart-fort Oglethorpe, Aug. 30,

from 3-7 p.m.; and 22 Zero Veterans at American Legion-rossville, Aug. 31, from noon to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 24

On Saturday, Aug. 24, Chickamaug­a and Chattanoog­a National Military Park rangers and living historians will conduct artillery demonstrat­ions at the Chickamaug­a Battlefiel­d Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. These programs are free of charge. On Sept. 20, 1863, Battery I of the 2nd Illinois Light Artillery sprang into action near the Mcdonald Farm, the visitor center’s present-day location. Their mission was to cover the retreat of the defeated Union

army. At one point, the cannon fired so rapidly that one of the artilleris­ts, an Irish immigrant named Thomas Finnell, refused to load another round because he lost track of whether or not his cannon fired the previous shell. The homecoming service at Ringgold First Baptist Church, 7611 Nashville St., will be Sunday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. Lunch will be in the fellowship hall following the service.
