- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans opened the Region 6-A tournament in Marietta last Monday night and pulled off an upset of host Walker, 59-45.

Gordon Lee trailed 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, but came charging back to grab a 24-19 lead at intermission. They would increase their advantage to 45-33 at the end of the third quarter, before going on to the victory.

Gracie O’neal dropped in 18 points for the Navy-and-white, followed by 12 from Emma Mcgraw and eight from Sadie Gasaway. Addison Sturdivant finished with six points. Skye Alexander had five points and Emma Phillips finished with four. Ashlyn Schmidt, Riley Shirley and Sidney Gasaway all scored two points apiece.

Darlington 51, Gordon Lee 31

The Lady Trojans were looking to pull another upset in Marietta one night later at Mt. Bethel Christian, this time against the state-ranked Lady Tigers. However, Darlington would score 34 points in the second half to pull away for the win, ending the regular season for the Lady Trojans.

Mcgraw had 11 points for Gordon Lee (9-17), who trailed 17-12 at halftime. Star Alexander finished with eight points, followed by Skye Alexander with five. Sidney Gasaway scored four points, Phillips had two and O’neal chipped with one.

The Lady Trojans finished 7-7 in their final 14 games after a 2-10 start to the year.

However, their GHSA power rankings, released on Monday, were not high enough to make the state tournament as they finished 29th. Only the top 24 qualified.

O’neal earned second team AllRegion honors, while Mcgraw was an honorable mention pick. Weston Beagles was also second team on the boys’ side.
