Oakwood girls capture region championsh­ip

The top-seeded Oakwood Christian Lady Eagles captured the GAPPS Division I-A Region 1 championsh­ip on Friday with a 50-34 win over second-seeded Unity Christian School of Rome in the region tournament finals at Praise Academy in Powder Springs.

Lily Green had 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the win. Avery Green poured in 14 points and recorded seven steals. Lexie

Asher had eight points, three boards and two steals, while Grayson Broadrick had eight points and three blocks.

Mckenley Baggett scored two points and added five rebounds, while Raleigh Suits helped out with four boards, a steal and a block.

With the victory, OCA (183) was scheduled to host the first round of the GAPPS Division I-A state tournament Monday night at 6 p.m. Due to newspaper deadlines, results of that game were not available as of press time.

Oakwood girls 43, Lyndon Academy 42

The Lady Eagles survived a very tough test from No. 3 Lyndon Academy in the semifinals in Powder Springs back on Thursday. Avery Green had 18 points and six rebounds for Oakwood, followed by 11 points and seven boards from Lily Green.

Broadrick had five points and four assists. Asher collected three points and five rebounds, while Baggett, Suits and Anslee Tucker all scored two points apiece.

GCA boys 64, Oakwood 43

The Eagles, depleted by injuries and illnesses, dropped to 8-15 overall after a regular season loss at Georgia Cumberland Academy in Calhoun last Tuesday night.

Andrew Phillips and Gavin Broadrick both had 12 points for OCA, followed by Price Ray with nine and Chase Lanham with eight. Caleb Epperson added two points and Garrett Dempsey finished with one.
