Fort Oglethorpe OKS agreement with Walker County for SPLOST payout

- By Adam Cook

Officials in Fort Oglethorpe and Walker County have agreed to a split of potential SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) funds if voters approve the tax in May.

During the Feb. 10 City Council meeting, Interim City Manager Mike Helton explained the {span style=”text-decoration: underline;”}upcoming vote in Walker County and explained how it could impact the city if approved by voters.

“It’s time for Walker County to be considering another SPLOST referendum, and as they do that, they need to get some figures in,” Helton explained. “I understand meetings have taken place with Walker County, and they have established the amount that they are setting with that SPLOST.”

With part of Fort Oglethorpe existing in Walker County, the county has to consider the city when appropriating the funds that would come in from the tax.

“In conjunction with the amounts that they’ve advised,

Fort Oglethorpe is going to be entitled to — if estimations come through — approximately $137,280.”

Helton said the city has provided Walker County with a list of potential projects for the money’s use, which include water and sewer projects and equipment, as well as police vehicles and/or equipment.

“Those amounts respectively for water and sewer are $95,280, and for police vehicles and equipment it’s $42,000,” Helton said.

Formalization of that potential disbursement involved approval of an intergovernmental agreement between the two local governments.

“They (Walker County) anticipate that they will be collecting approximately $44 million through the SPOLST,” Helton said. “It is going to be a six-year cycle with a 33-percent growth rate.”

Helton explained that if approved by voters on May 19, the county would then begin collection in of the tax in January 2021.

The council unanimously approved the agreement with a 5-0 vote.
