Heritage girls earn first win at home

After coming close to knocking off Class AAA state-ranked Coahulla Creek in their opener on Nov. 21, the Heritage Lady Generals broke in the win column for the first time this season last Monday.

Heritage opened up an eight-point lead after one quarter and held off visiting North Sand Mountain (Ala.), 49-36, to give new head coach Greg Elkins his first win in Navy-and-red.

Brooke Matherly connected on a pair of 3-pointers and had 12 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Lauren Mock finished with 11 points and Gracie Murray added nine.

Dayonna Perryman popped in seven points and Sydnee St. John had four. Two each from Elli Jost, Kortney Mckenzie and Ella Debity rounded out the night.

Kolbie Bobo had 11 points for the visitors and Vicky Hassell went for 10.

Silverdale girls 44, Heritage 39

The brief winning streak, however, would be snapped one night later as the Lady Generals dropped to 1-2 overall after a tough loss to the Lady Seahawks, a traditiona­lly solid small-school private team from the Scenic City.

Mock paced the home team with 13 points. Matherly and Perryman each had nine points with Perryman grabbing seven rebounds. Murray scored six points and dished out five assists and St. John scored two points and pulled down four rebounds.

North Sand Mountain boys 88, Heritage 46

The Bison from Higdon, who averaged over 83 points a game last season and who are usually one of the highest scoring teams in the TriState area, showed why in last Monday’s nightcap as four players scored in double figures.

NSM led 31-16 at halftime and 48-27 at intermissi­on before finishing the night with 16 made 3-pointers. Chandler Sullivan had 18 points. Russ Marr and Luke Maples each added 16 and Derek Bearden dropped in 11.

Cooper Terry scored 18 points with two 3-pointers and an 8 for 8 performanc­e at the free throw line for the Generals. Mitchell Kennedy added nine points and Carson Palmer had eight.

Silverdale boys 57, Heritage 43

The Generals slipped to 0-3 on the season after a home loss to the Seahawks last Tuesday, their final game before the Thanksgivi­ng holiday.

Silverdale jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the first eight minutes and took a 31-22 lead into halftime. They led by 10 after three

quarters and put the game away by limiting Heritage to just seven points in the fourth quarter.

Owen Neal had 18 points for Silverdale and Sam Bambrey added 12. The Seahawks went 12 of 17 from the free throw line and connected on

seven 3-pointers as a team.

Terry led all scorers with 21 points for the Generals, including a pair of threes, while going a perfect 7 of 7 at the charity stripe. The senior had connected on his last 15 attempts from the line, going into this week.

Palmer had 10 points and a pair of threes. Kennedy and Ty Loveless each had five points and Carter Bell chipped in with two.
