OAKWOOD GOLFERS OFF TO FAST START

The Oakwood Christian Eagles picked up two victories last week.

Last Tuesday, they earned a 195-245 win over Ridgeland on a blustery and unseasonab­ly cool day at Windstone Golf Club.

Garrett Dempsey shot a 44 for the Eagles and was the day’s low medalist, while J.T. Cathey was one shot back at 45. The remainder of the team score included a 52 from Jacob Cathey and a 53 from Jaxon Chambers.

Also playing for OCA was Ryder Ferguson (59), Gavin Dempsey (61) and Caleb Ryan (62).

Landon Plott had a 56 for Ridgeland and Chandler Davis had a 57. Josh Litts and Noah Jimenez both shot 71 to complete the team total, while Brayden Plott finished with a 72.

Two days later, Garrett Dempsey again took low medalist honors as the Eagles defeated Unity Christian School, 197-229, at the Stonebridg­e Golf Club in Rome.

The senior fired off a round of 44 as the Navy-and-gold won by 32 shots. J.T. Cathey, Jacob Cathey and Gavin Dempsey rounded out the team score with rounds of 51.

Aiden Foster (56), Chambers (63) and Ferguson (66) also played for OCA.

LFO FALLS TO DADE

The Warriors were bested by the Wolverines, 184-233, last Tuesday in a ninehole match at Brown Acres.

Brody Webster paced LFO with a 57, followed by Beau Welborn and Nate Carter with a pair of 58’s and Levi Harwell with a 60. Also teeing it up for the Warriors were Jonathan Parkhill (62) and Vincent Benton (62).

HOYAS LEAD NGI

Harrison High School took the first round lead at the 2023 North Georgia Invitation­al after a score of 310 during the first round this past Thursday at The Farm in Dalton.

Creekview is second at 317, while Dalton is third at 328. The Catamounts had the day’s low medalist in Cole Stockard, who shot a 3-under par 69.

Calhoun sits in fourth place at 335, followed by Lafayette (344), Northwest (346), Heritage (356) and Gordon Lee (366).

Lafayette got an 81 from Grant Langford,

an 83 from Mason Thompson, an 86 from Shane Johnston and a 94 from Hayden Bowman. Jackson Brewster also played for the Ramblers and shot 105.

Heritage was led by an 83 from Sam Johnson. James Kennedy shot an 86. Luke Fitzsimmon­s carded a 91 and Mason Davis ended his round at 96. Also playing for the Generals was Sawyer Eaton (103) and Nathaniel Johnson (135).

Andrew Amor and Ayden Cordell both shot 80 for Gordon Lee. Sam Carswell had a 95 and James Eldridge finished Round 1 with a 111. Also playing for the Trojans was Tanner Maynor (121) and Asa Brown (122).

The second and final round of the tournament will be played on Thursday of this week at Fields’ Ferry in Calhoun.

GORDON LEE TAKES ON DALTON

The Trojans teed off against the Class 5A Catamounts in a nine-hole match at Mclemore Golf Club this past Wednesday, but came up on the wrong end of a 153-182 score.

Amor shot a 38 to lead the way for GL, followed by a 41 from Cordell, a 50 from Carswell and a 53 from Brown. Eldridge shot a 56 and Levi Webb carded a 61 to round out the varsity scores. Jake Seay (54) and Maynor (56) played junior varsity for the Trojans.

JOHNSTON POSTS CAREER BEST

Senior Kamryn Johnston shot a career-low nine-hole score of 49 as the Lady Ramblers beat Rome, 153-177, in a match at the Lafayette Golf Course this past Thursday.

Johnston was the day’s low medalist, while the rest of Lafayette’s team score included a 51 from Ella Maples and a 53 from Maggie Green. Adalyn Brown (59) and Kayla Bailey (61) also played for the Lady Ramblers.
