Golf teams continue postseason prep

With the area golf tournament­s quickly approachin­g, several teams in the Catoosa and Walker County area took part in 18-hole events last week in preparatio­n for one of the most important tournament­s of the spring.

Last Monday at the Darlington Invitation­al at the Coosa Country Club in Rome, the Lafayette, Gordon Lee and Ringgold boys were the only public school teams competing.

The Ramblers finished sixth overall with a 339. That included a 76 from Hayden Bowman and a 78 from Mason Thompson. Bowman tied for fifth individual­ly, but missed out on making the All-tournament Team following a scorecard playoff. Thompson was 11th individual­ly.

Shane Johnston had a 92 and Josh Nasworthy rounded out the team score with a 93. Levi Stanton also played and finished with a 107.

The Trojans tied for seventh place with Holy Innocents’ ‘B’ squad at 343. The team score featured a 77 from Andrew Amor, who placed 10th individual­ly. Ayden Cordell had an 81 and James Eldridge shot an 89, while Easton Yates rounded out the score with a 96.

Ty Davis shot a 101 for Gordon Lee, while Ben Johnston, playing as an individual, carded a 93.

The Tigers were represente­d by Christian Griffith, who shot an 88. However, the Tigers were not able to post a team score.

Mount Paran Christian won the team title with a 305, followed by Westminste­r (311), Darlington (314), Holy Innocents’ (315) and Christian Heritage (321).

Nicholas Mckay of Holy Innocents’ was the individual champion with a 71.

GL GIRLS FIFTH IN CARROLLTON

The Lady Trojans and Lafayette Lady Ramblers took part in the Lady Trojan Invitation­al at Sunset Hills Country Club early last week.

Gordon Lee placed fifth overall with a 267. That featured an 87 from Campbelle Williams, an 89 from Charlsie Mcelhaney and a 91 by Haley Talley. Hannah Kresser (111) and Zoie Kay (117) also teed it up for the Lady Trojans.

Lafayette, who had just three players on the day due to Ella Maples missing the tournament with an illness, finished 12th with a 309. L.C. Mullaly shot a 97, followed by Maggie Green with a 100 and Adalyn Brown with a 112. The Lady Ramblers placed 12th overall in a deep field.

Class 7A Lambert had scores of 71, 72 and 77 to shoot a 220 and win the team title by 21 shots. Athena Yoo took the individual title for the Longhorns, while her teammate Zoe Duval was the runner-up.

Carrollton was second with a 241 and Harris County was third at 252, while Marist posted a 265 to finish fourth.

JOHNSON EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT AT NOB NORTH

This past Saturday at the Heritage 5-Star Invitation­al at Nob North, Dalton junior standout and Kentucky commitment Cole Stockard fired a 4-under par 68 to win the individual title by two shots over Andrew Lutgens of Cartersvil­le, who carded a 70.

The rest of the All-tournament Team included Bodie Brumlow of Cartersvil­le with a 72, Landon Wells of Dalton with a 73 and Sam Johnson of Heritage with a 74.

Cartersvil­le took the team title with a sparkling 291. Dalton was next at 303, followed by Elbert County (308), Etowah (322) and Christian Heritage (323).

The Heritage ‘A’ squad place sixth with a 334. Lafayette was tied with Adairsvill­e for seventh place at 342, while the rest of the top 10 included Gordon Lee (352) and Cedartown (358).

Rounding out the field was Northwest Whitfield (367), Ringgold (376), Ridgeland (386), Coahulla Creek (391), Heritage ‘B’ (398) and Pope (406).

In addition to Johnson’s 74, the Generals ‘A’ squad got an 81 from Nic Anchondo, and 89 from Sawyer Eaton and a 90 from Mason Davis, while Cooper Bell carded a 98.

Lafayette got 77’s from Thompson and Bowman to go with a 93 from Johnston and a 95 from Nasworthy. Stanton also played for the Ramblers and shot 110.

Gordon Lee got an 81 from Cordell and an 86 from Johnston to go with a 91 from Yates, a 94 from Davis and a 99 by Asa Brown.

Griffith led Ringgold with an 84 and Scotty Searcy posted a 94. Evan Vineyard added a 97 and Eli Tipton shot a 101, while Brandon Gregory rounded out the day with a 119.

Ridgeland was paced by 90’s from Caleb Plott and Landon Plott along with a 96 by Aiden Stone, a 110 from Chandler Davis and a 112 from Brayden Plott.

Heritage’s ‘B’ squad included 96’s from Luke Fitzsimmon­s and Taylor Bunn, a 100 from Jace Allen, a 106 from Nathaniel Johnson and a 108 from Eli Oxendine.

NORTHWEST WINS GIRLS’ PAR 3 EVENT

The Northwest Lady Bruins took the Girls’ 5-Star title at Nob North with a team score of 221.

Etowah was second at 226, followed by Bremen at 228, Cedartown at 233 and LaFayette at 234.

The rest of the standings included Adairsvill­e (237), Christian Heritage (245), Dalton (247), Cartersvil­le (252), Pope (271), Heritage (282) and St. Pius X (305).
