Victory gives Galaxy tie for league lead

Galaxy 4, Red Bulls 0: Robbie Keane scored twice, Landon Donovan had a goal and two assists and Los Angeles beat visiting New York last night. The Galaxy (16-5-9) moved back into a tie with the Seattle Sounders for the Major League Soccer lead with 57 points. The Galaxy stretched its undefeated run to nine games in its only meeting of the season with the Red Bulls (10-9-11).

The Red Bulls are in fifth place of the Eastern Conference with 41 points, two points behind the fourth-place Crew. The top five teams in each conference make the playoffs.

Keane opened the scoring with a looping chip shot off Donovan’s cross in the eighth minute and finished the scoring in the 82nd minute, beating goalkeeper Luis Robles for his 17th goal of the season.

Donavan scored the Galaxy’s second goal in the 50th minute, picking defender Chris Duvall from behind in the penalty box.

Gyasi Zardes added a third on a give-and-go with Donovan in the 69th minute. It was Donovan’s 134th career assist, one short of Steve Ralston’s MLS record. Dynamo 2, Fire 0: Omar Cummings and Boniek Garcia scored and Houston beat visiting Chicago to remain alive in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Houston (10-13-6) is eighth in the conference with 36 points.

Cummings scored his fourth goal of the season in the 15th minute, and Garcia connected in the 67th off a header from midfielder Brad Davis.

Chicago dropped to 5-8-16.

Timbers’ Johnson out for season with broken leg

Portland Timbers captain Will Johnson had surgery in Toronto to stabilize a fractured tibia and fibula in his right leg.

The team made the announceme­nt a day after the Portland midfielder and Canadian internatio­nal was hurt in the first minute of a game against Toronto FC.

Johnson is expected to miss about six months. He collided with Toronto defender Mark Bloom going to the ground for a loose ball near midfield.
