Cornell’s strong finish dooms wrestlers

Heavyweigh­t wrestler Jeramy Sweany defeated Josh Fox 3-0 in the final match Sunday to give No. 8 Cornell a 19-18 upset over No. 4 Ohio State as part of the MWCA National Duals Championsh­ip series at Newman Arena in Ithaca, New York.

The Buckeyes (11-3) dropped six of 10 matches, including five of the final six, in losing to the Big Red (13-2). Top-ranked Nathan Tomasello (133) of Ohio State secured a technical fall over Mark Grey after five minutes of action while Buckeye teammate Micah Jordan (149) pinned Jonathan Furnas in 5:35. Other OSU wins came from Luke Pletcher (141) and Kollin Moore (197).

Baseball

A Jake Scudder RBI single in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 deadlock as Kansas State edged Ohio State 3-2 in the Sunshine State Classic Series in Kissimmee, Florida. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, the Buckeyes (2-2) tied it as Tre’ Gantt singled in Shea Murray, who had tripled, before Jalen Washington doubled to score Jacob Barnwell, who had walked.

OSU starter Jake Post scattered five hits in six innings. Jake Vance was the loser in relief against the Wildcats (3-1).

Softball

Lena Springer tossed a complete game and Alex Bayne hit two home runs to propel Ohio State past Louisville 4-3 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Springer yielded four hits and struck out seven for the Buckeyes (5-3), retiring 16 straight batters at one point. Bayne hit a solo homer in the first and added a tworun shot in the seventh against the Cardinals (7-2).

Tennis

Mikael Torpegaard defeated top-ranked Petros Chrysochos 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 in the deciding singles match as No. 3 Ohio State (13-0) stunned No. 2 Wake Forest in an ITA National Indoor Team Championsh­ip semifinal at the University of Virginia.
