West Virginia tops Iowa State for Big 12 No. 2 seed

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Daxter Miles Jr. tied a career high with 23 points to lead No. 10 West Virginia to an 87-76 victory over No. 24 Iowa State on Friday night.

Nathan Adrian added 16 points for the Mountainee­rs (24-7, 12-6 Big 12), who clinched the second seed in next week’s conference tournament behind top-ranked Kansas.

Iowa State (20-10, 12-6) can earn the third seed if No. 11 Baylor loses at Texas on Saturday.

Naz Mitrou-Long led the Cyclones with 22 points. Monte Morris and Deonte Burton scored 17 apiece, and Matt Thomas had 16.

Miles scored 16 of his team’s 18 points during an eightminut­e stretch spanning both halves.

Darral Willis Jr. scored 17 points and Rashard Kelly added 14 as Wichita State overpowere­d Bradley in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfin­als. The second-seeded Shockers (28-4) shook off a slow start to beat Bradley (13-20) for the 16th straight time. Bradley, the No. 7 seed, hasn’t beaten Wichita State since Feb. 24, 2010. Darrell Brown led the Braves with 18 points, and Antoine Pittman had 13. Wichita State shot 37.1 percent from the field (23 for 62) but outrebound­ed Bradley 51-37.

Jason Carter scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds and Ohio (19-10, 11-7) defeated visiting Miami (11-20, 4-14) to clinch a bye in the MidAmerica­n Conference tournament. The Bobcats scored the last six points of the first half to lead 30-19, and they led by 18 with five minutes left in the game. Jordan Lauf scored 17 points and Steve Taylor Jr. had 11 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists and visiting Toledo (16-15, 9-9) beat Eastern Michigan (15-16, 7-11) in the MAC. Taylor’s layup with 5:30 left put Toledo up 50-49 and the Rockets led the rest of the way. Blake Hamilton scored 32 points as host Buffalo (17-14, 11-7) beat Bowling Green (13-18, 7-11) to earn a bye to the quarterfin­als of the MAC tournament. Zack Denny scored 16 for the Falcons.

Matt Donlan scored 24 points and Braun Hartfield added 22 to lead Youngstown State (12-20) past Cleveland State (9-22) in the opening round of the Horizon League tournament in Detroit. The Penguins face top-seeded Oakland today.

Dominique Oden scored a career-high 24 points, Ashley Morrissett­e added 21 and fifth-seeded Purdue (21-11) rallied from 17 points down in the second half to defeat fourth-seeded Indiana (20-10) in the quarterfin­als of the Big Ten tournament.

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough made six 3-pointers and scored 28 points as Maryland (27-2) advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals with a victory over Minnesota (15-15).

Arike Ogunbowale scored 19 points and Brianna Turner added 16 to help No. 3 Notre Dame (28-3) beat Virginia (19-12) in the ACC quarterfin­als.

Lexie Brown scored 22 points to help Duke (26-4) beat Syracuse (21-10) in the ACC quarterfin­als.
