Samuelson powers UConn women to AAC title

Katie Lou Samuelson had a record-breaking night, scoring 40 points and hitting all 10 of her 3-point shots to lead top-ranked UConn to a 100-44 rout of South Florida in the American Athletic Conference Tournament final on Monday.

Samuelson set a Division I record for consecutiv­e 3-pointers in a game and also set the tournament’s singlegame scoring mark.

Napheesa Collier added 15 points as the Huskies (32-0) won their 107th straight game and extended their conference winning streak to 82 games.

Dorottya Nagy had a season-high 15 points and Kitija Laksa added 13 for South Florida (24-8). game. Martin, a sophomore guard, was named the tournament’s most outstandin­g player. West Virginia had never won the Big 12 Tournament. UNC Wilmington (29-5) clinched its second straight NCAA Tournament berth with a victory over College of Charleston (25-9) in the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n championsh­ip. LaVone Holland scored 20 and made all three of his 3-pointers and Northern Kentucky (23-10) beat Youngstown State (13-20) to advance to the Horizon League Championsh­ip game. Tennessee State (27-7) beat top-seeded UNC Greensboro to win the Southern Conference Tournament championsh­ip. Francis Alonso made five 3-pointers and scored 28 points for UNC Greensboro (25-9).

Jordan Washington had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Iona (22-12) held off Siena (17-17) 87-86 in overtime to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Nigel WilliamsGo­ss had 25 points and eight rebounds, and No. 4 Gonzaga (31-1) secured a spot in the West Coast Conference title game for the 20th straight season with a win over Santa Clara (17-16).

Jimmy Hall scored a career-high 33 points to go with 13 rebounds, Jalen Avery scored 17 of his career-high 24 points, including five three-pointers, in overtime and host Kent State (19-13) beat Central Michigan (16-16) in a Mid-American Conference tournament first-round game. Jaylin Walker scored 29 with a career-best 14 boards for the Golden Flashes. Marcus Keene scored 41 points with nine three-pointers and Braylon Rayson had 32 with five threes for the Chippewas. It was Keene’s seventh 40-point game of the season.

Jonathan Williams scored 18 points and host Toledo (17-15) pulled away in the second half to beat Bowling Green (13-19) in the first round of the MAC tournament. The Rockets advance to play second-seeded Ohio (19-10) on Thursday. Wes Alcegaire led Bowling Green with 17 points.

Tucker Haymond scored 16 points to lead Western Michigan (16-15) over visiting Miami (11-21) in the first round of the MAC tournament.
