Baseball falls on bases-loaded walk in 13th inning

Joe Gellenbeck drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the 13th inning that scored Nate Soria with the winning run as Xavier defeated Ohio State 3-2 in the baseball home opener at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium on Saturday.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the Buckeyes (8-9) rallied to draw even. Shea Murray scored on a sacrifice fly by Jalen Washington before Noah McGowan laced an RBI single that plated Jacob Barnwell, who had earlier reached on an error.

Both the Buckeyes and Musketeers (8-10) managed to get to get two runners on base in the 12th inning before the threats were quelled. Gellenbeck's game-winning RBI walk came off of Ohio State reliever Curtiss Irving (0-1). Xavier reliever Taylor Williams (1-0) got the win after recording the final eight outs. Buckeyes starting pitcher Jake Post did not figure in the decision after he logged five innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits.

Ohio State will travel to Xavier for a doublehead­er today at Hayden Field to conclude the series. Women's lacrosse

Kim Coughlan completed a hat trick with a goal in overtime to propel Michigan past Ohio State 12-11 in a Big Ten opener for both at Ohio Stadium.

Molly Wood and Baley Parrott each scored three times to lead the Buckeyes (5-5, 0-1). Sage Darling added two goals for Ohio State, who led 6-4 at intermissi­on. The Wolverines (3-7, 1-0) lost a three-goal lead late but prevailed as Coughlan scored unassisted 2:07 into OT.

Women's gymnastics

No. 24 Ohio State earned 195.525 points to finish in fifth place at the Big Ten championsh­ips at Rutgers Athletic Center. The champion was Michigan (197.300).

Individual­ly, Alexis Mattern led the Buckeyes with a runnerup in the vault (9.9).
