Cavs crumble in OT loss to Hawks

-

Another day, another shocking loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

Even so, LeBron James isn’t too concerned about the Cleveland Cavaliers with the playoffs about to start.

“Obviously, the last 10 games we’ve been 5-5,” he said. “We had some good moments and we had some not-so-good moments today. The best thing for our team is we want to go down the stretch, be healthy and put a game plan together.”

Paul Millsap scored 22 points and the Hawks took advantage of Cleveland’s fourthquarter collapse to overcome a 26-point deficit and stun the Cavaliers 126-125 on Sunday.

Kyrie Irving scored 45 points for Cleveland, and James had a tripledouble with 32 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists before the fourtime MVP fouled out in overtime.

Tim Hardaway Jr. added 21 points to help Atlanta beat Cleveland for the second time in three days.

The defending champion Cavaliers dropped into a tie with Boston atop the Eastern Conference. Both teams have two regular-season games remaining. If the Cavs and Celtics finish with the same record, Cleveland will get the top seed for winning the season series.

Russell Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson’s 56-year-old record with his 42nd triple-double of the season, then he broke the Denver Nuggets’ hearts with a buzzerbeating 3-pointer. That eliminated the Nuggets from playoff contention. Westbrook had 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in breaking Robertson’s record of 41 triple-doubles that stood since the 1961-62 season. DeMar DeRozan scored 35 points and Toronto beat New York to wrap up at least the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. Toronto pulled away to reach 50 victories for the second straight season. The Raptors can still finish second if they beat Cleveland in their regularseason finale and Boston loses its final two.

Brady Cherry drove in three runs and Noah McGowan and Dominic Canzone each had two RBI to lead Ohio State to an 11-2 romp over host Penn State and a sweep of their Big Ten baseball doubleheader Sunday.

Ohio State rallied for four runs in the ninth to win the opener 5-2.

In the second game, Ryan Feltner (1-5) pitched three innings of scoreless relief for Ohio State (14-17, 3-6), which scored three runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead over Penn State (11-19, 1-5).

In the first game, Cherry had a two-run triple in Ohio State’s four-run ninth. Bo Coolen led off with a homer to tie it at 2. After Jalen Washington and Tre Gantt walked, Cherry tripled to right. McGowan followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Kyle Michalik (1-1), who got the final out in the eighth, got the victory. Seth Kinker pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Men’s lacrosse

Jack Jasinski had four goals and three assists to lead No. 9 Ohio State past No. 11 Johns Hopkins 13-9 in a Big Ten game at Ohio Stadium.

Johnny Pearson and Lukas Buckley each scored two goals for the Buckeyes (10-2, 1-1), who outscored the Blue Jays 7-2 over the final two periods. Johns Hopkins fell to 6-4, 1-1.

Softball

Shelly McCombs pitched a three-hit shutout to lead No. 21 Ohio State (23-9, 7-2) to a 5-0 victory over No. 16 Michigan (28-8-1, 8-1) in a Big Ten game at Buckeye Field.

McCombs (4-0) struck out 10 and walked one.

Anna Kirk had a solo home run in the third inning and Ashley Goodwin had a three-run shot in the Buckeyes’ fourrun fifth.

The crowd of 1,836 broke the stadium record of 1,764 set Saturday. The three-game series attendance of 4,979 also set a stadium record.
