Men’s volleyball headed back to NCAA Tournament

The Ohio State men's volleyball team — the defending national champions — clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by sweeping Grand Canyon in the Midwestern Intercolle­giate Volleyball Associatio­n tournament championsh­ip game on Saturday night in St. John Arena.

The second-ranked Buckeyes (30-2) won all three games, by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-11. In addition to winning their 16th tournament title, OSU also won the regular season crown by going 16-0 in MIVA play.

Miles Johnson had 11 kills and Maxime Hervoir and Nicolas Szerszen added nine for Ohio State, and Christy Blough had 30 assists. The Buckeyes had 40 kills to 24 for No. 14 Grand Canyon (19-11).

The NCAA Tournament selection will be at 1 p.m. today. Play-in matches are scheduled for Friday through May 2. The national semifinals and championsh­ip game are May 4-6 at St. John Arena.

Men's lacrosse

Johnny Pearson's rebound goal with 2:57 left in overtime completed a comefrom-behind victory for the No. 8 Buckeyes, who rallied from a 7-2 deficit to an 11-10 victory over second-ranked Maryland in a Big Ten game at Ohio Stadium.

The Buckeyes scored six consecutiv­e goals spanning the second and third quarters, and two more in the fourth to take a 10-8 lead before the Terrapins (9-3, 3-1) tied it with 2:58 left in regulation. Eric Fennell finished with five goals for OSU (12-2, 3-1).

Women's golf

Ohio State climbed into third place in the team standings with a round of 294 in the Big Ten Championsh­ips at TPC River's Bend in Mainesvill­e, near Cincinnati.

Jaclyn Lee shot a 2-under-par 70 and moved up to fourth place overall (2-under 142) after two rounds, six strokes behind Michigan State's Sarah Burnham, who shot a 63 to take the individual lead. The Buckeyes (14-over 590) trail the Spartans by nine strokes and Northweste­rn by 17.

Men's golf

Ohio State was tied for fourth after two rounds of the Robert Kepler Intercolle­giate at OSU Scarlet, posting an overall score of 31-over 599.

The Buckeyes' Daniel Wetterich was tied for sixth, two strokes off the lead, among individual­s. Wetterich shot a second straight 2-over 73 and trails Chase Johnson of Kent State, who shot a second-round 71 and is at 144 overall. The Golden Flashes lead the team standings at 11-over 580, one shot ahead of Illinois.

Baseball

UNC Greensboro (24-14) jumped on OSU starter Connor Curlis early and often on the way to an 11-4 win at Bill Davis Stadium, the same score as the Spartans' victory over the Buckeyes on Friday.

Curlis was roughed up for eight runs — six earned — on 11 hits through 4 innings before reliever Curtiss Irving gave up three more runs in the sixth inning for an 11-1 Spartans lead. Connor Pohl had two doubles and Tre' Gantt had a two-run single for the Buckeyes (15-24).

Softball

Ebonee Echols' RBI single off Shelby Hursh with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Michigan State (24-17, 7-9) a 7-6 win over the visiting Buckeyes in a Big Ten game. OSU (27-13, 10-6) took a 6-4 lead in the fifth on a two-run homer by Anna Kirk.
