QB, fi nally: Kizer taken in 2nd round

- From wire reports

The Cleveland Browns’ never-ending search for a franchise quarterback has brought them to DeShone Kizer of Notre Dame.

After passing on quarterbacks in the first round, Cleveland selected Kizer in the second round with the No. 52 overall pick on Friday. The 6-foot-4, 233-pound Kizer struggled last season for the Fighting Irish, but the Browns are intrigued with his size, arm and potential.

The Browns have started 26 quarterbacks since 1999, when they returned as an expansion team. Their inability to find a long-term answer at QB has been the

the draft with eligibility remaining.

It’s a roll of the dice until the call comes.

“I wasn’t frustrated. I stayed patient through the whole thing,” Samuel said in a conference call with Carolina media. “Then I got a call, they said they were going to draft me. I was real excited. My family and all were excited. So it was a great moment, being with everybody else.”

McMillan, on the other hand, grew emotional a couple of times when speaking with Miami media.

“It’s just amazing,” McMillan said. “All this hard work has finally come into play and it’s time to get back to work. It’s just a blessing. I’ve been through a lot in my life.”

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said he and other in Miami’s front office had a different impression of McMillan’s reaction when they called him with the news.

“I think for him it’s probably, all his hard work, the culmination of everything probably hit him,” Grier said. “Because when we talked to him I was telling him, ‘Get excited man.’ And he was like ‘Yes sir. I’m real excited to come to Miami.’”

Samuel was the second player taken overall by the Panthers, who obviously were intent on replenishing their playmaker list after losing receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Corey Brown, two former Ohio State players. They took Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey, who set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards in 2015, in the first round and Samuel — the only player in the country to top 700 yards in both rushing and receiving in 2016 — in the second.

“It’s going to be a great offense,” said Samuel, who sees himself as a slot receiver, McCaffrey as a running back. “He is a terrific player. We complement each other well. I’m excited.”

Elflein said the Vikings haven’t told him whether he will play guard or center, but that didn’t seem as important to him as simply getting that call.

“I’m going to go to work every day, do my best and do everything I can to help the team,” Elflein said.

The last four rounds of the draft will be conducted today, starting at noon.
