Tennis teams make Big Ten semifi nals

The Ohio State men’s tennis team is one win away from its 13th consecutiv­e trip to a Big Ten final after it coasted to a 4-0 win over Minnesota in a quarterfin­al match on Friday at West Lafayette, Ind.

JJ Wolf, the Big Ten freshman of the year, clinched the Buckeyes’ win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matic Spec of Minnesota (17-10). Mikael Torpegaard and Kyle Seeling also won in singles for OSU.

Wolf and Hunter Tubert opened doubles play with a 6-1 victory over Eli Ogilvy and Stefan Milicevict­o. Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo secured the doubles point for OSU with a 6-3 decision.

The Buckeyes (27-3) advance to a semifinal match against Wisconsin at 10:30 a.m. today.

Women’s tennis

Fourth-ranked Ohio State blanked Nebraska 4-0 Friday in a Big Ten quarterfin­al at Urbana, Illinois.

Anna Sanford and Sandy Niehaus opened doubles with a 6-2 win, and Gabriella De Santis and Ferry Angeles Paz clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 decision. Francesca Di Lorenzo, De Santis and Angeles Paz all had straight-set singles wins for the top-seeded Buckeyes (26-2), who will face fourth-seed Illinois in a semifinal at 11 a.m. today.

Men’s golf

The Buckeyes shot 3 over par and were in second place after the opening day of the Big Ten tournament at Baltimore Country Club. Will Grimmer and Caleb Ramirez each shot a a 1-under 69 for OSU, which trails leader Illinois by 14 strokes.

Softball

Shelby Hursh and Morgan Ray combined on a three-hitter and the Buckeyes downed Iowa 3-1 in a Big Ten game at Buckeye Field.

Hursh went 5 innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Ray came on with two outs in the sixth with the bases loaded and induced a groundout to second base, then retired the side in the seventh for her first save of the season.

Taylor White gave OSU a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-run double, and Emily Clark drove home Lilli Piper with a single in the sixth. The scheduled doublehead­er was shortened to one game because of rain, with the second game being made up today at a time to be determined.

Baseball

Ohio State’s Big Ten game against Nebraska at Bill Davis Stadium was suspended in the fourth inning because of rain, with the Cornhusker­s leading 6-2. The game will resume at 3:05 p.m. today, with Game 2 of the series starting 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended game.
