Suarez admits mistake in crucial pickoff

-

ST. LOUIS — Eugenio Suarez offered no excuses after Friday’s 7-5 loss to St. Louis for being picked off third base. The third baseman took ownership of his mistake that cost the Reds a prime scoring opportunity.

“I made a mistake,” Suarez said afterward. “I was not paying attention. I came off the base and he got me on that tag. I don’t know. That happened. You have to pay attention to the game.”

It came at a crucial time in what would be the Reds’ fourth straight loss.

With the Reds trailing 3-1 in the top of the sixth, Suarez kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Scott Schebler followed with a single and Devin Mesoraco worked a walk, seemingly putting Cardinals starter Lance Lynn on the ropes.

With Cardinals manager Mike Matheny on the top step of the dugout, catcher Yadier Molina walked toward the mound and Lynn seemed to be wondering just why he hadn’t gotten the ball back yet from his catcher.

Molina, an eight-time Gold Glover, had an eye on Suarez, who went to third, rounded the base and took three steps toward home. Molina snapped a throw to third baseman Jedd Gyorko, who tagged Suarez for the third out of the inning.

"Just about everyone in the National League has been picked off by this guy at least once in their careers if they've been here long enough," Reds manager Bryan Price said.

Saturday's game postponed by rain

Saturday’s game in St. Louis was postponed because of rain. No makeup information was announced. The Reds are scheduled to return to St. Louis in September and the two teams have a mutual off day June 26.

Today's pitching matchup is slated to be the same as Saturday's, with the Reds' Bronson Arroyo facing Mike Leake.
