Men’s, women’s tennis win Big Ten

The Ohio State men’s and women’s tennis teams each won Big Ten championships on Sunday, and each did it at the expense of Michigan.

The OSU men beat Michigan 4-1 in the title match in West Lafayette, Indiana, for the program’s 12th tournament title and 10th in the past 12 years.

The women beat the Wolverines 4-0 in the final in Urbana, Illinois.

For the men, the teams of Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard, and Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce breezed to victories to give the Buckeyes the doubles point.

Torpegaard, Di Feo and Pollanen each won in singles to finish the rout.

Ohio State (29-3) has beaten Michigan (22-6) in 24 consecutive matches.

The NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Ohio State likely will host firstand second-round matches May 12-13.

For the women, Gabriella De Santis, Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz each posted straight-set victories in singles against Michigan (21-5). Sanford and Sandy Niehaus teamed up for one doubles win and De Santis and Paz also won to give OSU (28-2) the doubles point.

OSU will be making its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The bracket will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The top 16 seeds will host first- and second-round matches May 12-14.

Men’s golf

Will Grimmer shot a 4-under-par 66 to tie for second place and lead Ohio State to a thirdplace finish in the Big Ten championships in Baltimore, Maryland.

Grimmer and Northwestern’s Ryan Lumsden finished at 206, one stroke behind Dylan Meyer of Illinois.

Illinois won the team title at 829, followed by Northwestern at 845 and OSU at 855. The thirdplace finish was Ohio State’s best in the conference since 2004.

Baseball

Ohio State’s eightrun eighth inning was not enough to catch Nebraska (26-16-1, 9-51), which won the Big Ten game 11-9 at Bill Davis Stadium.

Shea Murray had a two-run double in the eighth and Bo Coolen and Jalen Washington each had two-run singles as Ohio State (17-26, 5-10) cut Nebraska’s lead to 11-9.

Brady Cherry led off the OSU ninth with a single, but Luis Alvarado got a flyout and two strikeouts to earn his eighth save.

Softball

Lea Thompson’s twoout, two-run double keyed a three-run rally in the sixth inning that gave Iowa (17-29, 8-12) a 4-2 victory over Ohio State (30-14, 13-7) in a Big Ten game at Buckeye Field.
