Texas student goes on stabbing spree

-

AUSTIN, Texas — A student with a “Bowie-style” hunting knife stabbed at least four people Monday on the University of Texas campus in Austin, killing one and seriously wounding the others before surrendering to police, authorities said. The motive was unknown.

Student Rachel Prichett said she was standing in line at a food truck outside a gym when she saw a man with a knife approach the person standing behind her.

“He grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved the knife in it,” Prichett said. “I just started running as fast as I could.”

Police identified the suspect as 21- year- old Kendrex J. White. He did not resist when officers confronted him at gunpoint.

University Police Chief David Carter said the stabbings occurred within a one- block area as the attacker “calmly walked around the plaza.”

One person died near the gym. The others were taken to the hospital. There were reports of additional victims with non- life- threatening injuries, according to tweets from Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

The attack occurred just a short walk from the landmark clock tower that was the scene of a mass shooting in 1966.

S. D. gunman in pool chair shoots 7 at party

SAN DIEGO — A gunman despondent over a recent breakup opened fire at a poolside birthday party and phoned his ex- girlfriend as he kept shooting strangers, killing one woman and wounding six other partygoers before he was killed by officers, police said Monday.

Peter Selis, 49, sat on a pool chair during most of the rampage, calmly shooting guests at the party with a .45- caliber handgun.

Witnesses said Selis was wearing a black coat and sitting alone during the party for a man’s 50th birthday Sunday at an apartment complex. Selis lived there.

At one point the guest of honor invited the man to join the party. That’s when Selis drew a handgun and shot the honoree in the torso, said witness Demetrius Griffin.

“He sat the whole time. Even when he reloaded his magazine, he sat in his chair,” said Griffin.

After shooting two people, Selis, an auto mechanic, called his ex- girlfriend and said what he was doing. “It is apparent that Selis wanted his ex- girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage,” Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

Two victims remained in critical condition but were expected to survive, Zimmerman said.

Three officers shot Selis after he pointed a largecaliber handgun at them, she said.

Deputy killed as inmate escapes from Iowa jail

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — An inmate shot two deputy sheriffs, killing one of them, and escaped from an Iowa jail on Monday before he was recaptured a short time later after a high- speed chase across the border with Nebraska.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said Wesley Williams CorreaCarmenaty, 23, managed to steal a deputy’s gun after he returned from court and shot the two deputies around 11 a.m. CorreaCarmenaty then stole the transport van and crashed through a garage door at the Pottawattamie County Jail, sparking the chase.

Killed was Mark Burbridge, 43. The wounded deputy and a civilian who was shot during a failed carjacking were both in fair condition.

Correa-Carmenaty had just been sentenced Monday to 45 years in prison for his role in a botched robbery.
