Hamilton's RBI double caps comeback

- By Zach Buchanan

CINCINNATI — Billy Hamilton hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to lift the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

The 10th began inauspiciously as Jose Peraza tried and failed to bunt for a hit. Tucker Barnhart drew a walk after a long at-bat against Daniel Hudson, and was replaced by pinch-hitter Arismendy Alcantara at first.

Alcantara scooted to second when Hudson misfired a pickoff throw, but couldn’t advance farther when Devin Mesoraco grounded to third. That brought Hamilton to the plate.

Hamilton worked a 2-and-2 count, then roped a ball into right for a game-winning double.

Michael Lorenzen (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Adam Duvall had a three-run home run for the Reds.

Two innings after the Reds roared back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead, the first Reds reliever out of the bullpen let the Pirates back in.

Drew Storen got two quick outs, freezing Chris Stewart for a called third strike and getting Alen Hanson to ground out. Storen then got ahead of Josh Harrison 0 and 2 before delivering change-up and a slider for balls to even the count. Storen’s next pitch was a slider at the top of the zone, and Harrison rocketed it to left for a tying homer.

Storen finished the inning, and Lorenzen pitched two scoreless innings to extend the game to extra innings.

A day after hitting three doubles and smacking the winning hit in St. Louis, Duvall again keyed a comeback. Duvall came to the plate in the sixth with two on and one out, and the Reds trailing 2-0. Hamilton had reached on an error and then stolen second, and Joey Votto had walked.

Duvall took a Gerrit Cole fastball down the middle for a strike, and then hit a slider just over the fence in left-center for a three-run homer.
