Legislators get epidemic’s urgency

-

The budget introduced by the Ohio House of Representatives on Tuesday underlined the representatives’ commitment to tackling our state’s top public-health emergency. Adding $170 million to combat the opiate epidemic will expand treatment capacity, prevent the onset of substance abuse and support those who are struggling to find solutions for them and their loved ones.

In these times, all of us are affected by the opiate epidemic, and we all have a responsibility to do whatever we can to prevent and treat it. Every investment made in the name of ending this epidemic will result in a reduction in the number of children and parents lost to this terrible disease. That’s why I was pleased to see the House’s clear commitment to preventing and treating opiate addiction.

There are still many things to work out and questions that beg answers, but the message here is clear — Ohio’s legislators are doing their part to end this epidemic.

Marcie Seidel Executive director Drug Free Action Alliance Columbus and love and I was overjoyed to see so many places that were offering that welcome to all people regardless of gender or sexuality.

I only have one problem with the article: It left (at least) one of us out — Karl Road Christian Church, 5400 Karl Road, Columbus 43229. We are an open and affirming congregation. We welcome people of all genders, sexuality, political party, country of origin, language, abilities, races, skin colors, age, martial status. We believe that Jesus Christ welcomed all people and as followers we are called to do the same.

We profess to be a loving, accepting, community of faith and we put our actions where our words are. We welcome anyone seeking a loving, accepting community of faith. Our services are 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday. Our phone number is 614-888-3444. Come and find a blessing.

Under this bill, workers can be offered compensatory time instead of overtime pay, but the employers still hold all the cards in determining if the worker can actually use the comp time they’ve earned. It is essentially a pay cut for workers with no guarantees of flexibility or time off.

It also allows employers to borrow their employees’ overtime pay interestfree, without any security. Working families need true family-friendly policies such as earned sick time and paid family leave, not actions like H.R. 1180 that take us in the wrong direction. Columbus
