treats.

She also said you should change up your routine, “So that the dog or the cat doesn’t connect all the change with bringing baby home.”

Once baby arrives, allow the pet time to get used to new smells before introducing the two, Matusicky said.

Stay calm when the introductions do take place or your pet might take anxious cues from you and associate them with baby, Finney said.

Don’t lavish a pet with attention when the baby isn’t around and ignore the dog or cat when the baby is near. Allow cats spaces to hide and let them adjust at their own pace. Give them treats or new toys when they venture out.

Moving

Make sure you take the things that carry odors pets are used to, such as clothes and furniture, Matusicky said, and maintain the same routine as much as possible.

Expose your cats and dogs to the different sounds and sights they might encounter and give them treats all the while, Finney said.

Plug-in pheromone diffusers might help calm animals, experts say.

For cats, allow them their hiding space; it might take two weeks for them to acclimate to changes. Confine them to one or two rooms at first so the change isn’t overwhelming.

New pet

“Most importantly, never force interaction between two pets,” Finney said. “Allow them to do it at own their own speed, and watch body language.”

When sudden change occurs, pets might exhibit behavioral problems, lethargy or a change in eating habits.

“The No. 1 thing to keep in mind is patience,” Finney said. “Your pet needs time to adjust to just like you do.”

For any change, use comfort items. Give your pet a favorite blanket or toy that has the pet’s odor on it. Give them something that smells like their owner, like a T-shirt that has been worn.
