A man who police say shot himself in the head in February as officers tried to take him into custody in the fatal shooting of his ex- girlfriend has recovered enough to be jailed.

Danny Fabro, 54, made his initial appearance Thursday in Franklin County Municipal Court, where bail was set at $ 1 million.

Fabro is charged with murder in the death of Joyce Fox, 56, who was shot in the head about 4 a. m. on Feb. 17 in the parking lot of the Far West Side UPS distribution center at 5101 Trabue Rd., where she worked. Police said the relationship between Fabro and Fox had ended in November.

Fabro fled the scene in his silver Chevrolet pickup truck, but witnesses gave a description of the vehicle to police.

After a traffic chase, police used stop sticks to disable his truck near the intersection of West Broad Street and North Wilson Road on the West Side.

At some point during a standoff, Fabro shot himself in the head, police said.

Fox was pronounced dead at Mount Carmel West. Fabro was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

He was charged with murder the next day, but the case was inactive while he recovered in the hospital.

The case was reopened Wednesday, when a warrant was served on Fabro, according to Municipal Court records.

The bail was set by Judge James P. O’Grady. The case will be presented to a Franklin County grand jury.
