Canada, Russia each get wins at worlds

PARIS — Canada rallied to beat France 3-2 on Thursday night in the world hockey championsh­ip, breaking a tie early in the third period when the puck deflected past goalie Florian Hardy off French teammate Jonathan Janil.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic was credited with the goal.

Bidding for a third straight world title and a record-equaling 27th overall, Canada leads Group B with 12 points. The Canadians are three points ahead of Switzerlan­d and five clear of third-place Czech Republic and fourth-place Norway — separated on goal difference. Finland is fifth, and France sixth.

The Czech Republic beat Norway 1-0 on Jan Kovar’s overtime goal.

In Group A in Cologne, Germany, Russia scored three goals in a 1:10 span in the second period in a 3-0 victory over Denmark. Bogdan Kiselevich, Sergei Plotnikov and Nikita Gusev scored for Russia. Gabriel Landeskog and Elias Lindholm scored in Sweden’s 2-0 victory over Latvia.

Russia leads the group with 11 points, with the second-place United States and third-place Latvia two points behind and separated by goal difference. Sweden is fourth with seven points.

The top four from each group will advance to the quarterfin­als. against members of the Atlantic Coast Conference through 2037.

The schedule from 2026 to 2037 was announced Thursday and continues a partnershi­p that started in 2014. The games from this fall until 2025 have already been announced.

The Fighting Irish play Labor Day night games at Clemson in 2031 and at Virginia Tech in 2036. Notre Dame will host 30 of the games from 2026 through 2037, while 30 are on the road. champion Rafael Nadal made it to the quarterfin­als.

Djokovic defeated Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-5, while Nadal eased past Nick Kyrgios of Australia 6-3, 6-1.

On the women’s side, third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania reached the semifinals by beating Coco Vandeweghe of the U.S. 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour.

Halep will play Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, who defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherland­s 6-3, 6-3.

Kristina Mladenovic of France advanced to the final four by overcoming seven double faults to beat Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 6-4. Mladenovic will play eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who easily defeated Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-0.
