Special shows Morgan still at top of his game

- By David Wiegand

Tracy Morgan didn’t name his terrific new Netflix comedy special “Staying Alive” just so he could replicate John Travolta’s cocky stroll through New York while the BeeGees set his pace with the song of the same name playing in the background.

Morgan truly is staying alive, with comedy that’s better than ever.

The special is available for streaming beginning today.

As most everyone knows, Morgan isn’t just fortunate to be alive. He had to struggle to find his way back to health after a 2014 accident in which the Mercedes Benz minibus he was driving was involved in a horrific collision caused by a Wal-Mart truck on the New Jersey Turnpike.

James McNair, a friend of Morgan’s and a fellow comic, was killed.

Morgan’s new standup special — filmed at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey — finds Morgan riffing hilariously about his accident, his family, his career and 100 other topics, including such sure-fire comedy topics as life after death.

He even takes a few swipes at Wal-Mart, saying that, after the accident, “everything (in the stores) went up a penny.”

Dressed in a Tony Manero white suit, which gives him license to strike a hilarious disco pose at the head of his show, Morgan strolls back and forth onstage, pausing occasionally to settle into an easy chair to deliver parts of his comedy.

Many viewers know Morgan well through his “30 Rock” character, but standup reinforces his talent as a comedian.

He remains in command throughout the performance, exhibiting flawless timing in a routine that’s liberally peppered with fourletter words but big on humor and, yes, heart.
