Wellington’s Biernat turns back teammate to win district title

Reigning Division II runner-up Connor Biernat of Wellington won the Central District championsh­ip Saturday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over teammate Trevor Ball in the final at Upper Arlington.

Both players advanced to the state tournament in Mason.

The upcoming doubles draw will feature the tandems of Erin Min and Austin Lawrence of Columbus Academy and Leo Schottenst­ein and Mark Nudelman of Bexley. Min and Lawrence earned a district title after the Lions duo defaulted in the final because of illness.

In Division I action at Hilliard Davidson, Robert Cash of New Albany defeated Mitchell Thai of Hilliard Bradley 6- 0, 6- 1 in the final. Stu Brdicka of Olentangy beat Dublin Coffman's Bryan Yoshino 6-2, 6-2 in the consolatio­n match as all four punched their tickets onward to Mason.

The doubles championsh­ip went to Josh Cole and Jack Zelezny of Upper Arlington, who bested New Albany's Joel Jose and Graeme Green 6-3, 7- 6 in the final. Evan Yakubov and Jack Dabek of St. Charles got past Upper Arlington's Jack Schadek and Jack Hughes 6-0, 6- 2 in the consolatio­n match to complete the local qualifiers.

SOFTBALL

Lancaster 5, Groveport 4: Camie Shumaker hit a game-ending home run in the seventh inning to deliver a Division I Central District championsh­ip for the ninth-seeded Golden Gales (25-4) at Pickeringt­on Central. Shumaker went 4 for 4 at the plate, including two doubles, with three RBI. She also garnered the win in the circle after she recorded a complete game and allowed seven hits. Jodi Kern hit a grand slam to give the sixth-seeded Cruisers (25-6) a 4-0 lead in top of the first inning.

Lakewood 10, Bloom-Carroll 0, 6 innings: The defending Division II champion and top-seeded Lancers (26-1) won by the run-rule over the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (18-11) in a district final at Pickeringt­on Central. Courtney Viestra pitched a complete game and yielded one hit for Lakewood, which had 11 hits. Megan Davis, Brenna Brownfield and Tigan Braskie homered for the Lancers, who are seeking their fifth state title.
