Danny Phillips agreed to a backyard brawl and walked out of the fray with a new band.

Phillips' fists flew against John Stevens several years ago after the latter challenged him at a party. The two reconciled later in the evening and decided to form a musical partnership.

“He’s the guy that got me off my (butt), and I owe him the world for that," Phillips said of his sparring partner.

Their group — Undergrads — began as an acoustic three-piece, morphing into a punkrock quintet with a single on rotation on WRKZ (99.7 FM).

They’ll perform on Friday at Double Happiness.

When did you guys develop your current sound?

It’s just been really the last couple of months

we’ve taken it seriously because we finally have a full band. We probably went through six or seven drummers just in the matter of nine or 10 months. … We were in different paths in life than our drummers. It was always right drummer, wrong time. We found Skylar (McEntire), and it’s great. His mom always makes us cookies and stuff.

What is it like to hear your song on the radio for the first time?

It’s absolutely insane. It’s super surreal. I feel like a little kid. Having your friends call you and say, "Hey, man, I heard you on the radio” is thrilling. Especially because we haven’t been taking everything seriously for too long, and then all of a sudden it blows up.

What’s your album about?

It’s all about our lead singer’s ex-girlfriend. … It’s just about being heartbroken. You know, stereotypical stuff.

Any good stories from the road?

We went and played Kentucky last month, at the Thompson House in Newport. John went out in the audience and was starting the mosh pit. He had this microphone cord and it wrapped around his feet and he fell flat on his face, but he didn’t miss a note and he kept on singing.
