OF THE CIT Y W ITH US

- By Kelly Lecker | klecker@dispatch.com; @kellylecker

You’re growing up so fast, Columbus. Last month, we learned that the city had surpassed Indianapolis in population, making it the second-largest city in the Midwest, and the 14th largest in the country. New restaurants open all the time. Apartment buildings seem to pop up out of nowhere. Fashion designers and entrepreneurs grab national headlines for their work.

Growth is a thread that runs through many of the stories in the daily Dispatch. It’s reflected in the parking woes in the Short North. More traffic prompted the construction of express lanes on Rt. 23 just north of I-270. An estimated 1 million more people who will populate the region by 2050 means more apartment buildings and homes.

We wanted to take a step back and look at what all this growth means. What’s next for Columbus? What will the city look and feel like in 20 years? Will there be enough jobs for everyone, and what will they be? Will most cars, trucks and buses drive themselves?

Each month through the end of the year, we’ll explore the future of Columbus and central Ohio. Today’s issue focuses on growth and transportation. Look for these themes on the fourth Friday of each month: Homes and neighborhoods Health and science

Education Sports and leisure Business and economy Innovators and the future You’ll find much more online on Dispatch.com. There, you can hear from residents about their visions of the future, watch videos of some of the most-promising neighborhoods in Columbus and find more stories and interactive maps and graphics.
