Illinois Senate mulls fate of state budget
CHICAGO — The fate of Illinois’ first budget since 2015 moved to the Senate on Monday after the House of Representatives completed its work by approving legislation to implement a spending plan for fiscal 2018.
The measure, which passed in a 72-36 vote and includes a way to pay down the state’s $15 billion unpaid bill backlog, follows the House’s approval on Sunday of a $36 billion spending bill and a revenue bill boosting taxes by $5 billion that Governor Bruce Rauner has vowed to veto.
All three measures, which passed the Democraticcontrolled chamber with the support of some Republicans, are destined for votes in the Senate.
Authorities were still investigating the cause of the crash but said they had no reason to believe it was intentional. The driver, a 56-year-old man from Cambridge, was cooperating with authorities, according to police.
‘‘He is known to be a very nice gentleman, from his peers, and we have no history of violations or anything on him,’’ said Maj. Frank McGinn, of the state police. He did not identify the driver but said that the crash appeared to be a ‘‘tragic accident.’’
Around 1:40 p.m., the driver’s vehicle jumped a curb before it struck other cabdrivers who were sitting in a rest area awaiting their next fares, according to McGinn.
A police official said it appears the driver mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake and it’s believed to be a case of “operator error.” official said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
