Skid continues despite homers from Votto, Duvall

-

MIAMI — Joey Votto hit his 27th home run and Adam Duvall his 23rd, but the slide continued for the Cincinnati Reds, who lost to the Miami Marlins 7-3 on Saturday night.

The Reds have dropped six in a row and are 2-14 since the All-Star break. Starter Tim Adleman (5-9) allowed six runs and six hits in only 4 ⅓ innings.

Adleman's undoing came in the fifth, which started with a leadoff walk to Adam Conley — just the second drawn by the Marlins pitcher in three big league seasons. Dee Gordon followed with his third hit, Giancarlo Stanton brought both home standing up with a double to center and Marcell Ozuna chased Adleman with an RBI double to left to make it 6-2.

Christian Yelich's three-run homer put Miami on top for good in the third, an opposite-field shot for a 3-1 lead.

Votto opened the scoring with his homer to straightaway center in the first. Duvall connected in the fourth, and has now homered in three of his last four games. Tucker Barnhart had an RBI groundout in the ninth for the Reds.

Cozart goes on DL before deadline

Under the new collective bargaining agreement, teams can backdate stints on the disabled list by only three days. That puts a premium on knowing a player’s prognosis sooner rather than later, and the Cincinnati Reds were forced to make that call on Saturday on shortstop Zack Cozart.

Cozart re-injured his ailing right quadriceps in Tuesday’s game against the New York Yankees, and has been out ever since. He tried some straight-line running on Friday, but his body quickly told him he wasn’t ready yet. Saturday, the Reds put him on the 10-day disabled list.

Cozart will not be eligible to come off the disabled list until after the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline, but being on the DL does not prevent him from being traded. Leading up to Monday’s deadline, Cozart had been one of the team’s top trade candidates. However, the demand for shortstops on the trade market was virtually non-existent.
