Mariners end deGrom’s win streak

-

SEATTLE — One timely hit by Seattle’s Jarrod Dyson, combined with a defensive lapse by the New York Mets, was enough to end Jacob deGrom’s winning streak.

Yovani Gallardo took a shutout into the sixth inning, Dyson delivered a key two-run single and the Mariners beat the Mets 3-2 on Saturday, ending deGrom’s eight-start winning streak.

“We didn’t tear the cover off the ball by any means, but we got key hits in key spots and continued to grind it out,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

Gallardo (5-7), banished to the bullpen in mid-June, allowed one run and five hits in 5 ⅔ innings in his second outing since returning to the rotation. He struck out two and walked two, flashing back to the form when he won 72 games over five seasons with Milwaukee.

TIGERS 5, ASTROS 3:

Jose Iglesias hit two RBI doubles, Matt Boyd pitched into the seventh inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Houston Astros 5-3 on Saturday night. Iglesias’ second run-scoring double tied the game at 3 in the seventh. Ian Kinsler then flared a single to center to give Detroit the lead.

YANKEES 5, RAYS 4: After delivering the walk-off home run Thursday, Brett Gardner came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out in the ninth inning Saturday. As chants of “Let’s Go Yankees!” poured from the crowd, Gardner smacked a single up the middle for the walk-off single off left-hander Dan Jennings as the Yankees beat the Rays, 5-4, in front of 43,015 at Yankee Stadium in 3 hours, 22 minutes.

DODGERS 2, GIANTS 1: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts felt it was a perfect time to get Rich Hill out of the game. No reason to push anyone these days. Hill pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning, helping the Dodgers beat the Giants 2-1 Saturday for their seventh consecutive victory.

Corey Seager had three hits and Cody Bellinger drove in two runs as major league-leading Los Angeles won for the 38th time in 44 games.
