Jackets, defenseman Somerby agree to deal

The Blue Jackets announced Monday that they signed defenseman Doyle Somerby to a two-year, entry-level contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Somerby, 23, was a fifthround draft pick of the New York Islanders in 2012 but spent the past four seasons at Boston University. He totaled eight goals and 19 assists with 160 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating in 151 career games.

He was a captain as a senior in 2016-17 after a junior season in which he set career highs in goals (five), assists (eight) and points (13) while ranking second in the Hockey East conference with 77 blocked shots. As a sophomore, he scored the game-winning goal in a national semifinal against North Dakota.

The 28-year-old from Belarus gave birth to her first child in December and she returned to the tour in June. She detailed the dispute with the boy’s father in a long Twitter post last week, saying she might not be able to bring her son with her to New York.

“I am sadly unable to compete in this year’s U.S. Open due to my ongoing family situation that I am working through,” Azarenka said in a statement.
