Dispatch staff earns top honors

The Columbus Dispatch earned 37 awards, including seven Best of Show honors and 15 other first-place honors from the Ohio Society of Profession­al Journalist­s chapters of Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.

The Dispatch earned more honors than any organizati­on in the large-newspaper category.

Dispatch.com earned first place for best website, while the newspaper earned best of show for Page One design.

Photograph­er Adam Cairns was named best photograph­er in Ohio and Doral Chenoweth was named best videograph­er.

Other Best of Show awards included Holly Zachariah for the best defense of the First Amendment, Margaret Quamme for best critic and Dispatch staff for best special section for the section on John Glenn’s life.

Best of show second-place awards were awarded to The Dispatch for best daily newspaper and best special section and Michael Grossberg for best critic.

The Dispatch staff also earned first place for best deadline reporting for coverage of the November attack at Ohio State University.

Other first-place awards included: Marion Renault, best environmen­tal reporting; Jill Riepenhoff, Mike Wagner and Lucas Sullivan, best criminal justice reporting; Bill Bush, best education issues reporting on kindergart­en through 12th grade; Julia Oller, best rock and roll feature writing, best rock and roll commentary/ best music review; Glenn Sheller, best editorial page campaign; Allison Ward, best arts profile; Holly Zachariah, best newsmaker profile; Mary Mogan Edwards, best education issues reporting on higher education; JoAnne Viviano, best religion reporting and best medical/science reporting; Rita Price, best children’s issues reporting; and Lisa Abraham and Dan Gearino, best consumer reporting and best business reporting.

Second-place awards included Tom Reed, best sports reporting; Jim Siegel, best government reporting; Barbara Carmen, best editorial page campaign; Joe Kiefer, best headline writing; Holly Zachariah, best feature reporting; Michael Grossberg, best arts reporting; Rita Price, best social issues reporting and best human interest writing; Mike Wagner, best minority issues reporting; Courtney Hergesheim­er, best videograph­er; and Dispatch staff for best public service journalism and best public records use.

ThisWeek Community News received two firstplace awards. Columbus Monthly won three awards in the small circulatio­n category, including best monthly. Columbus Alive took home nine awards and Columbus CEO earned four awards.
