Missing macaw back home
Milo the renegade macaw is back home safe and sound after escaping from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium late last week.
Zoo officials said the bright blue and yellow bird was spotted and recaptured Sunday afternoon after he flew off from the open-air Animal Encounters Village show on Thursday.
Milo was located near the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell, about 3 miles north of the zoo, said zoo spokeswoman Patty Peters.
Usually, the show birds fly from one handler across the stage to another handler, but on Thursday Milo encountered a gust of wind that sent him out of the show area, zoo officials said.
Zoo workers had an eye on him in the tall trees in the North American exhibit and made attempts to get him to fly to a handler, but ultimately lost sight of him around 8 p.m. Friday when darkness fell.
The zoo asked the community to keep an eye out for the 8-year old bird after he went missing. Community members in the Kinsale area came through Sunday.
“We knew that people would be watching for him,” Peters said.
The last time a Columbus Zoo macaw escaped was September 2015. The bird, whose name wasn’t immediately available, left the Animals on Safari Show and was gone for five days before a resident spotted it atop a house on Carriage Road near Powell.
Healthwise, Milo “seems to be good,” after his adventure, Peters said.
