Brooks Sullivan wrong from start

-

I kept quiet when I first read of Cheryl Brooks Sullivan running for Franklin County treasurer, but I can't any longer. I feel compelled to respond to the controversy surrounding the inability to obtain bonding for her (" All eyes on her," Dispatch article, Monday).

How could anyone be surprised she is having this difficulty?

I think back to when I read about her before she was elected. My first thought was, "Is she serious?" Running for treasurer but she can't manage her own finances? That`s like putting the fox in charge of the hen house. Needless to say I didn` t vote for her and was stunned when she won.

Her campaign manager, the Rev. Joel King Jr., has seen fit to bring race into it and again I'm stunned. Does he really believe the things he's saying? Is this the only caliber of black female candidates he can find? I don't think so. Could race be behind her inability to be insured? Maybe, but with her background, how can he prove it? There are so many legitimate reasons to deny her bonding.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't know Sullivan. She might be a very civic-minded citizen who feels she has something to offer, but she and her supporters should own up to the fact that this might have nothing to do with race.

As a black female who usually votes Democrat, I am more concerned about the people who put her in office. Have we become so disenchanted with our candidates we vote only by race or party? No accountability?

I could go on and cite what is taking place in Washington as far as accountability, but I don’t believe I need to. Anyway, this is about our demanding more from our candidates on the local level.
